Through the research and analysis for the exterior and finishing for the building which located in ChungAng-dong, Chung-Ku (Hang-dong, HaeAhn-dong, ChungAng-dong and Kwan-dong) in Japanese Settlement District, after the opening of Jemul-po Harbor, conclusion can be made for the characteristics of building and methodologies are;
1. In the point of building's usage, residential housing can be mainly divided into Japanese style and western style. Commercial buildings can be divided into three categories such as instant wooden stores, westernized modern stores and geometrical sign board stores. In terms of location, warehouses were located in Hang-dong and HaeAhn-dong, commercial building in ChungAng-dong and both commercial and residential purpose building are located in Kwan-dong area.
2. In the aspects of structural materials, bricks were used for some office building in the times for open harbor and for the side finishing of the buildings which mainly built for both store and residence in early era of Japanese colony. Late 1920s, bricks became major structural materials for warehouse construction. Wood was used for residential housing from open harbor era to the end of Japanese colony, however, it had lost its natural characteristics by backing up with lime and mortar due to fire-protection and lack of the materials itself. It also been used for store building which were not very far from nearby building with mixing of bricks. Masonry was used only for limited time by high-society from their own country, therefore, it had not generally been used.
3. Characteristics of the facing in the exterior buildings are;
A. Buttress corbel was used to solve the problems in fire resisting wall with nearby building and corner finishing of facing lean-to roof and well treated to 1/4 was two courses, 1/8 was one course for the masonry structure.
B. Horizontal member of eaves became major finishing which determined the elevation changes for the front exterior. Continuous triangular masonry method was used for high-quality eaves.
C. Window shapes differed in various form from vertical square shapes in early era of Japanese colony to horizontally expanded double sliding window in late Japanese colony era.
D. Arch generally formed to the shape of segmental arch which was flat arch when the opening was less than one meter and parabola arch when more than one meter length. Especially, keystone was added to the top center of the arch for the warehouse building door in the case of opening's length and width has substantially big.
E. Stone was used for lintel girder for masonry and brick. If bricks used, it had treated by vertical joint or skewed stack to the direction of the center.
F. Bracket was used for sustaining lintel girder or canopy at the top part of opening in western style building. It also was used for lower part of the window sill. In case of high-quality buildings, round console was used for bracket. This method became steel or cement mold which mainly supported for the front door canopy.
G. Gable part which located in top part of the roof was initially in the shape of wooden structure which was made of weaved lath. It changed to use bricks to form the wall up to the end side of the gable in early era of Japanese colony. It was expressed the strong exterior effect by brick corbel.
Additionally, it is recommended to restore historical Chunang-dong area which was major district in Japanese colony as a cultural monument to maintain vanishing historic buildings and preserve the remaining buildings in that area as a reconsidering historical consciousness for the next generation.
