This study is on the influence of mother's sex-role attitude socio-economic status, children's age and children's sex on children's sex role attitude.
Many studies have been undertaken to examine the effects of personal and environmental factors on children's sex-typing and sex-role development.
Three kinds of sex-role theories are widely known: Psycho- analysis theory, Social-learning theory and Cognitive-developmental theory.
However, none of these theories can explain all the observed phenomena and the data concerning the sex-typed behavior.
Thus, the present study was undertaken examine the sex-role attitude of elementary school children. This study is aimed to find out the following facts.
(1) To find out if the factors of age and sex of children have any influence on the sex-role attitude.
(2) To find out the home environmental factors have any influence on the sex-role attitude.
A Survey type of this study was designed to verify following hypotheses.
I. There will be difference in the children's sex-role attitudes according to mother's sex-role attitudes.
II. There will be difference in the children's sex-role attitudes between two age groups.
III. There will be difference in the children's sex-role attitudes between sexes.
IV. There will be difference in the children's sex-role attitudes according to socio-economic. status of family.
The instruments used were Meyer's Test (1980) for measuring mother's sex-role attitude and Marantz & Mansfiled's Test (1977) for measuring children's sex-role attitude.
Sample used in this study are 349 children at two elementary schools in Seoul and their parents.
The data were analyzed by the analysis of variance, t-test and Pearson's Simple Correlation Coefficient by using Statistical Package for the Social Science Program.
The result of this study can be summarized as follows: (1) There are significant differences in children's sex-role attitudes according to mother's sex-role attitudes.
(2) There are significant differences in children's sex-role attitudes according to their age and sex.
(3) There are no significant differences in children's sex- role attitudes according to mother's employment or nonemployment, socio-economic status of family.
The change of children's sex-role attitudes must not be reviewed from the view of simple correlation with children's sex, age and home environmental variables, but must be reviewed from the view of the interaction of these variables.
