Joo Yo-han has been called, by many literal critics, a pioneer of Korean modern poetry. Nevertheless, studies on this poet both about personal history and works, have so far been poor. Just a stall partite of his works have been mentioned combing('. with studies on other poets' poets. Critics are apt to lust briefly comment on his works.
Given this, this thesis is aimed at seeking Joo Yo han's real position in Korean literary history thoroughly putting the chronicle of his life on order and studying his works as a whole. Behind the affirmative evaluation on him are his earlier and more enthusiastic interests on literature the any other literary aspired in the early stage of the Korean literature (this is why he is called a pioneer of Korean modern poetry)
He made efforts to resurrect the Korean traditional short lyric poet (silo). and creation of such literary monthly magazines as "Changjo","Dongk- kwang" and "Seabluk".
On the other hand, the fact that he wrote many indiscreet critical essays, which coven a broad range of literary genes, but do not have sound theoretical grounds cause him to be criticized for the nonsense for growth of the Korean literature.
Moreover, his once pro-Japanese behavior has a negative influence on an unbiased evaluation of his literature.
Despite these negative aspects, many say that he deserves a more respected position in Korean literary history.
Studies for thesis focus on the exact records of his life, and as a resent, some conclusions were reached
First, I am convinced that "Bulnori(Fine Play)" written in Korean came from "which was included in the 27 poems(which were written in Japanese, and are entitled "Ball. and Hyeekdaisiga"). we, were very fortunate to disc oven 27 poems for this thesis in a private source.
Second, as a member of the magazine "Changjo(creation)" Joo Yo-han paved the way to enter the modern poetry era in Korea by first adopting aesthetic and symbolic languages in his poetry. Before him, most poems had been written in the spoken language.
Third, he made a great impetus to the development of the Korean lalguage(Hangul) ; He helped Dong-A Ilbo issue its out-of-town editions in Hanged and encouraged scholars to write more in Hanged and hold many Hangul-nelated seminars. In his day, most newspapers were written in Chinese characters.
Fourth, he played important roles in developing Hanged typewriters and establishing the regulation of the exclusive use of Hanged, effective from 1970.
Fifth, he established a youth academy in order to foster young people's patriotic spirit, based on the spirit of An Chang-ho, a great historian and philosopher.
Sixth, he greatly contributed to creating various econom-related organizations.
In. conclusion, a final evaluation on the above-mentined achievements depends on historians, but studies on 10 poems that Joo Yo-han wrote when engaged in the independence movement in Beijing, China, and confirmation works on 10 other proems, which are anonymous but most likely written by him, deserve further careened study.
