Frost damage is one of the important meteorological disasters in agriculture reducing the yields of crops, impairing the quality of fruit. The author intended to clarify the spatial distribution of frost, and analysed first frost day and end dates, the free-frost period and the frost-days. The meteorological elements on/before frost-day were analyzed to provide the basic data for the modelling frost-forecast in the future.
The meteorological data such as minimum temperature, grass minimum temperature, daily range of temperature, mean relative humidity, minimum relative humidity and mean wind speed at the 59 stations under the Korea Meteorological Administration and surface weather maps over East Asia were used for 12 years (1982~1993).
The results of this study were as follows;
1. The first frost day occurred at October 7th in Taegwallyong but occurred before October 30th in the most inland area except a part of southern area. In the southern and eastern coastal area, the first frost day is delayed about two. weeks comparing with the inland. The first frost day in the western coastal area such as Sosan, Taechon was also around November 10th.
2. The last frost occurred between March 15th and 30th in the southern and eastern coastal area, but frost-day lasted until April 15th in the inland.
3. The period free-frost in the coastal area was more than 230 days except the northwestern coastal area and the period of free-frost was shorten 20~50 days comparing to the inland area.
4. When the migratory High pressure center was located in the southwestern area of Korea, the rate of frost occurrence was between 53% and 64% in the inland for Autumn. It was more than 70% in the bland area, on the contrary it was about 25% in the coastal area when the migratory High pressure center was located in the southeastern area of Korea during Spring.
5. The minimum temperature of frost-days was 1~-4℃ in Auturrul and 0~-5℃ in Spring. While Korean peninsular was under the influences of the continental High pressure or northwestern migratory High pressure, the minimum temperature showed the lowest values in the inland. The minimum temperature on grass during the frost-days was about -4~-9℃. The daily range of temperatures was 10~16℃, and the mean relative humidity was 40~70% on frost-days. Frost occurred in autumn when the minimum relative humidity was more than 25%, but the value decreased slightly to 20% in spring. The mean wind speed on frost-days was less than 4m/sec.
