The purpose of this study was to explore rational methdology of Korean dance-movement analysis based on presenting characteristics of Salpuri-chum movement through Rudolf Von Laban's movement analysis system.
For this purpose, the study analyzed Salpuri-chum, a most popular traditional dance in Korea, with three different methods : the dance notation, the interview, and the choreometrics analysis which was developed by Laban's theory.
The Salpuri-chum's movements were analyzed through the body, weight, time, space, breath, and flow elements quantitatively, qualitatively and objectively.
As a result of the notation analysis, the study found structural characteristics as follows: dominant of curve line, static slow walking with low body movement and natural shoulder movement which is combined with breath and arms movement.
As a result of the interview analysis, the study found structural and inner Effort characteristics as follows: the structure of the dance movement is three steps forward and backward, using the same parts of arm and leg, and repeatative form and the quality of dance is from body-mind Effort.
As a result of the objective analysis, the study found outer and substantial characteristics as follows: the structure of dance emphasizes body axis hold, vertical, vertical-diagnal and up-down twist.
Consistency on dance movement characteristics of the three different kinds of analysis were tested by dance specialist, Chung, Byung Ho, Korean traditional dance tresurer, Kim, Chun Hung, and dance movement analyst Van Zile, Judy. They decided the results of dance movement analysis as not consistent in body and flow elements, mostly consistant in space elements, partly consistent in weight and breath elements, and perfectly consistent in time elements.
This research has explored the potential of Laban movement analysis as a research tool for finding rational methodology of Korean dance movement analysis. Each analytic method used in this study had typical forms of peculiarity. This diversity contributes to minimizing biases and placing various points of view of Korean dance in clearer focus so that these analytic methods on the characteristics of Korean dance movements can be rationaly created for globalization of Korean dance.
