The purposes of this study are first, to investigate the language abilties of hearing-impaired children who are integrat,ed into normal hearing schools; second, to know the degree of adjustment of communication, academic achievement and relations wi th classmates in integrated classroom: third, to seek the requirements for the improvement of the adjustment of hearing-impaired children.
Twenty-five hearing-impaired students(from first grade through sixth grade in normal elementary schools), and their parents and their twenty-five teachers participated in this study.
The results of this study are as follows:
1) The degree of hearing loss is the main factor that influenced language abilities and accuracy of articulation of integrated hearing children. However, regardless of the degree of hearing loss, the children who generally showed less language delay, and more accuracy of articulation are ones who had long-term experience of oral education and sufficient speech instruction before being integrated. Therefore, if the hearing-impaired children have long-term experience of oral education and speech instruction before being integrated they will have better language abilities and adjustment skills.
2) lntegrated hearing-impaired chilren used hearing and speech reading to understand speech of their teachers and classmates. However, they reports their difficulty in understanding of their teacher and classmates; only 36.0% understood speech of their teachers and classmates. Integrated hearing-impaired children used oral language to speak to their teachers and classmates. The teachers and classmates had poor understand speech of the subjects(40.0%).Therefore, it is essential to improve receptive speech ability and speech intelligibility of integrated hearing-impaired children. However, if the teachers and classmates speak with written letters and gestures, integrated hearing-impaired children will have a better understanding of what is being said.
3) Integrated hearing-impaired children showed low academic achievement in their class. lt is needed to support their academic delay.
4)Many of integrated hearing-impaired children had a positive relationship with their classmates. However, the parents and teachers reported that personality(37.5%) and communication provelom(50.0%) cause a negative relationship.
5) The teachers and parents believed these difficulties can be overcome through public or private assistance.
6) The parents hoped that the teachers of hearing-impaired children will help academic delay and speech instruction of hearing-impaired children.
According to these results, the conclusions are as follows:
1) Continuous instruction of speech and language should be provided with hearing-impaired children after mainstreaming.
2) It is necessary to improve receptive speech ability of integrated hearing-impaired children, as well as use of writ ten letters and gestures by the teachers and classmates.
3) It is essential to assist academic delay and to improve teacher's instruction techniques for the integrated hearing-impaired children.
4) The effective plans to improve the adjustment of integrated hearing-impaired children will include:
- the placement of a special education teacher in a regular school.
- the regular classroom teachers learn special education.
- the use of the assistance teachers and itinerent teachers.
- provided the part-time assistance by others and in other place.
