The purpose of this study was to examine that how the number of vocabulary of each accidence had been increased by the hearing-impaired students and how the contents of the vocabulary had been changed as their grades went up.
Thirty students were participated, who were from the first grade through the sixth grade in the elementary school of an oral school. in Seoul. Their diaries had been analyzed for one year (from March, 1989 through Feb. 1990) for the accomplishment of this study.
The followings are the results of the study.
First, the number of vocabulary used by the hearing-impaired students had been increased as the grade went up.
Second, the most frequently used accidence was noun. The order of the frequency showed in this study was noun → verb → adverb → adjective → particle → numeral → pronoun → exclamation.
Third, the number of noun was reached 53% of the total numbers of the vocabulary used by the students. The common noun was used as much as 8.5 times compared with the proper noun. Incomplete noun was gradually showed from the third grade.
Fourth, pronoun and particle are closely associated with the syntactic function. En this study, however, the frequency of the pronoun and particle on the students' diaries was low. The result pointed that it is hard for the hearing ?impaired students to develop the syntactic functions.
Fifth, there was no significant increase in the usage of numberal, determiner, and exclamation between the grades.
Overall, the results imply that more advanced and various researches on the literal language learning are needed in order to develope the hearing - impaired students' good language skills as well the increase in vocabulary.
