This dissertation intended to make a study of the essence of synonym by the field-theory and the componential analysis-theory, provide the basic principles on the Korean synonym study, and at the same time it aimed to classify the generative factors through the consideration of the synonymy as a synchronic meaning-relation in connection with the diachronic meaning change.
1.In chapter II, the previous studies of the essence of synonym and its generative factors were introduced and their problems were examined.
(1) The views of the Korean academic world on the essence of synonym are divided into pros and cons about the perfectly same meaning. We took the latter here and used 'the similar meaning word' instead of 'the same meaning word' in the technical term.
(2) The views of the domestic learned circle on the generation of the Korean synonym are divided into two: The generative theory centered on the etymology and the generative theory of the various points of view. The latter was taken here, but the generative factors of the Korean synonym were divided into the extralinguistic factors and the linguistic factors in connection with the meaning change.
2. In chapter III, we looked into the essence of the synonym as a preceding work in order to bring to light the generative factors of the Korean synonym.
(1) In understanding the essense of the synonym, the approach of S. Ullmann type has a lot of difficulties not to compare the meaning differences, because it relates various names with one sense.
(2) We invoked the E.Coseriu's field-theory and grasped the synonym as a meaning-relation among the lexeme more than two. And then although we regarded the synonymy as a 'overlapping' with the componential analysis theory of E.A.Nida or G.Leech, we regarded the parts of 'overlapping' as all of the conceptional meaning come to be supplied with the common components.
3. In chapter IV, we set up the extralinguistic factors as the first one of the synonymous generation in Korean and looked into the generative aspects in the Korean synonyms.
(1) The Korean synonyms come to be generated according to the psychological factors.
① The Korean synonyms are generated by the similarity in senses. And they were considered by metaphor, euphemism, analogy, and blending. ② The Korean synonyms are generated by the contiguity in senses. And they were considered by the metonymy( the temporal, special, casual contiguity).
(2) The Korean synonyms come to be generated according to the social factors.
① The Korean synonyms are generated by the social institution. And they were considered by the terms for the family system, the marriage system, and the other social institution. ② The Korean synonyms are generated by the social stratum. That is, they were considered by infant languages, royal languages, high and low languages, argots, and technical terms. ③ The Korean synonyms are generated by the local community. The regional dialects occur as a result of the diffusion of renovated waves and they have synonymy with the common words of the centural point of rayonnement(the focal area).
4. In chapter V, as the second factor for the generation of the Korean synonym, linguistic factors were set up and the generative types in Korean synonyms were looked over.
(1) The Korean synonyms come to be generated according to the similarity and contiguity in names.
① The Korean synonyms are generated by the similarity in names. And they were considered by the folk etymology, the Koreanization of the sino-Korean, and phonetic interferences.
② The Korean synonyms are generated by the contiguity in names. And they were considered by syllabic and lexemic ellipsis. The one were considered by the apocope and aphesis and the other by deletion of the modifier and the head.
(2) The Korean synonyms come to be generated according to the influence of foreign languages.
① The Korean synonyms are generated by the sino-Korean. And they were studied from the meaning differentiation and synonymy between the pure Korean and the sino-Korean. The latter were studied from the synonymy of the correspondence of 'one to many' in the pure Korean and the sino-Korean and the overlapping of synonym in the pure Korean and the sino-Korean.
② The Korean synonyms are generated by the other foreign language except for the sino-Korean. They were studied from the other foreign language except for the sino-Korean and the meaning differentiation or synonymy of the pure Korean including the sino-Korean.
5. In chapter VI, we made a conclusion by summarizing the contents that had been discussed thus far in the main subject and represented at the same time the view in the future about the further study of the Korean synonym.
