The purpose of the present thesis is to suggest the sound, desirable direction of the child's views of a state and national unification as well as that of the education of national unification, based on the findings of the present inspection and analytical study of the child's views of a state and national unification between children near DMZ and children in other areas.
The subjects of such a study were total 600 children in which 200 were rural school children in an elementary school located in the Paju-gun area of Kyunggi Province and in an elementary school located in the Yunchon-gun area of Kyunggi Province, other 200 municipal children in an elementary school located in Seoul and another elementary school located in Inchon, and another rural 200 school children in two elementary schools in the Pyungtaek-gun of Kyunggi Province. To all the 600 subjects of elementary school children, 600 questionnaires each of which includes 25 questioning items were distributed and received with answers. However, 584 questionnaires which were though to be sincere in answering were utilized in statistical process.
The summarized findings clarified in the present study are as follows:
In general, it appeared that the elementary children's views of a state and national unification be considerably affirmative and positive; in the aspect of their such attitude regarding the area where they live, children residing in rural areas were the most affirmative in such views of a state and national unification; in the aspect of their such attitude regarding their grade, children at 4th grade showed more affirmative views of a state and national unification than children at 6th grade; however, no sex distinction significantly affected their attitude.
It is deemed that the reason that children near DMZ show less response to their views of a state and national unification than children residing in other areas is that they have poor attachment to the district where they live, thereby adversely resulting in having a bad influence on their love of fatherland and race, since most of them are children whose fathers are in military service, thereby often transferring their home to another place and that there are many children of the low-class family.
Also it is deemed that the reason that school children at 4th grade showed more affirmative reasons to their views of a state and national unification than children at 6th grade is that children at 4th grade have affirmative thought in a poor state of prudence of their views of a state and national unification such as liking 'whatever ours is' and 'our nation' without conditions, while children at 6th grade have more developed prudence and criticism than children at 4th grade.
Based on such results and findings, it is suggested that school children should be guided to having their thought that the district where they are residing at present even if temporarily is a part of the fatherland where they and their ancestors have been born, thereby having their thanking mind and pride of the fatherland, and they should be guided to recognizing the sanctity of national defense, so that they can have a firm expectation of peaceful national unification in the near future.
