The aims of this thesis are to answer the following questions : First, what do pro-forms affect in reading and how to solve the difficulties in pro-forms? Second, what types of difficulties are there in elliptical structures and how to solve the difficulties? Third, Is there any difference among ellipsis, pro-form and full fledged sentence?
1. Pro-forms are devices for substitution to avoid repetition. They refer to noun phrase(pro-NP), verb phrase(pro-VP), preposition phrase(pro-PP), and clause or sentence(pro-C/S). There are many kinds of pro-forms in textbooks and reference books. Pro-form is less comprehensive than full fledged sentence for teachers and students to comprehend.
Followings are the effective teaching methods of reading text which has pro-forms :
1) To teach the types and the usage of pro-forms.
2) To find out what each pro-form refers to.
3) To substitute pro-forms with word, phrase, clause or sentence to which are referred for original full fledged forms.
2. Elliptical structure is omitted structure for simplicity and economy. There are various kinds of ellipses in textbooks and reference books. Teachers as well as students have many difficulties in reading texts which contains elliptical structures. All of them prefer full fledged sentences to elliptical sentences. The followings are the methods to increase their reading ability in elliptical structures :
1) To teach students systematically the types of ellipses and their processes.
2) To recover full fledged sentences from omitted position.
3) To insert redundant information or pro-form into the omitted position.
4) To use relative pronoun 'who' or 'which' instead of 'that'.
5) To make use of the knowledge about grammar, that is, agreement in number, the role of subject and object, and animate noun phrase and unanimate noun phrase.
3. Among elliptical sentences, pro-form and full fledged sentence, both teachers and students like full fledged sentence best to catch the meaning. They like pro-form next. Among the three kinds of them, elliptical sentence is the most difficult to comprehend. Thus, we should give full fledged sentences to students who are in low level linguistic ability. According as they advance in their reading ability, we should supply them with pro-forms. When they reach high level, we should expose them much to elliptical sentences.
Pro-form and ellipsis play an important role for simplicity and economy. But it is not easy to catch the meaning in pro ?form or elliptical structure The writers of textbooks also should consider students' readability and compose textbooks in accordance with students' linguistic ability. Test constructors should make use of pro-forms and ellipses in order to increase discrimination and the degree of difficulty in English language test.
