It can be noted that KiJaeGiYi(企霽記異) not only accepted all the genres such as Cho˘nGiChe´(傳奇體) KaJo˘nChe´(假傳體) MongYuRok(夢遊錄) which had already been in the developmental history of novel but advanced them creatively.
This article takes following approaching methods to confirm it. To begin with, I researched bibliographies and the author’s life to understand KiJaeGiYi correctly. Looking into his thoughts and views on literature, I tried to examine the interrelation between KiJaeGiYi and his general world of literature reflected in his other works. Then, on the basis of it, I analyzed each work in KiJaeGiYi chiefly by means of historical biography and comparative literature. Finally, I covered the general features of KiJaeGiYi and its value in the history of our literature.
As the result of them I’ve come to know following facts.
KiJaeGiYi was produced during the period of life in seclusion resulted from political and social reasons. And so his view of life was present-centered Confucian thoughts, while during the seclusion he cultivated his morals by self-reflection. But in part he showed ToSon(道仙)-liking attitude of transcendental thoughts because of conflict in real world.
In the view of literature he put on an emphasis on the consistency of ToMun(道文) typical of the early Yi-Dynasty(朝鮮朝). Especially in poetry he adhered to the contemporary views of literature in the light of that he thought the essence of poetry was in the expression of nature(temperament) and that the cultivation of mind should be achieved by it.
In Chinese poetry(漢詩) he left more than 1500 various style of poems and he showed us his literary talent in as many as 25 Pu(賦) through which we can his views of life during the seclusion.
In theme he expressed his country life and feelings about it and brought the lesson of moral training into relief. By the way the same theme was also found in his proses, Moreover such themes had a deep relation to KiJaeGiYi.
Each work in KiJaeGiYi has a high value respectively in the history our novel because of its creativity not only in themes but in technique of expression and genres.
Followings are the outlooks of concret characteristics of these works.
The style of AnBingMongYuRok(安憑夢遊錄) is KaJo˘nChe´(the personification of flowers) combined with MongYuRok and it was in a transition period before the appearance of a genuine MongYuRok. The characters’feelings and thoughts were revealed allegorically and the dream-world was deeply related to their experience, through which the lesson of cultivating mental nature was stressed.
So˘JaeYaHoeRok(薯薺夜會錄) is a autobiographical novel that personified the four precious things of study (MunBargSaU: 文房四友). This is different from other previous works in that it had much poetry and proses in early part and added a funeral ode and used a motif of dream in ending part. We can see in this work not only the process of novelizing of KaJo˘nChe´ but also the subjectivity and refinement of the expression technique. This work stressed the world-civilizing by selfmoral-training rather than dissatisfaction, criticism of satire.
Cho´eSaengUJinGi(崔生遇眞記) enables us to guess the influence of Cho˘nDeungShinWhaw(剪燈新話) and KeumOShinWha(金鰲新話). But this is a step-further advanced work because it has the consistency of description of the characters, the spatio-temporal setting and the plot. In them Taoism was accepted by expressing the subconsciousness of seeking for ideal value.
In a sense HaSaengGiUJo˘n(何生奇遇傳) is similar to ManBokSaJo˘Po´Gi(萬福寺樗蒲記). But in general it used the similar motif to that of previous love stories such as YiSaengGyuJangJo˘n(李生窺牆傳) and reorganized it creatively. Especially unlike the previous works, it avoided dealing with supernatural subjects in order to express the reality vividly. In this respect this is a more advanced work. Moreover it had originality because of seeking for a happy ending within a realistic setting.
In the long run, the value of KiJaeGiYi in our novel history lies in that Shin had a great interest in the previous genres and succeeded to them creatively.
I tried to study Shin Kwang-han’s KiJaeGiYi to find its literary meaning and to set up again its position in the history of our novel. Until now, I think, our interest has been poured chiefly in the limited range of works of the few including Kim Shi-seup(金時習). But I dare to say that there are still many works that should be studied deeply and measured rightly. For this I began to study the high-valued literary heritage KiJaeGiYi which was a good work of a long vaccum period in the history of novel of Yi-Dynasty.
