The investigation of the musical environment of home uses the questionnaire which was modified and reconstructed suitable for the children by Yu Ae-Kyung (1985) on the basis of 'The Questionnaire of the Musical Environment (1974)' for the middle/high school students constructed by Music Education Research Center of graduate school of music education,
E-Hwa Women's University. The questionnaire used in the test of child's understanding of music is the Gordon's PMMA (The Primary Measures of Music Audition) (1978), which was translated and reconstructed suitable for the test by Lee Sook-Hee (1993).
Average, standard deviation and F-test of the collected and verified data are made to research the musical environment of home and the environment according to the attribution of parents' background. Average, standard deviation and t-test are made to research the developmental level of child's understanding of music and the difference with child's sex. And the relationship between the musical environment of home and child's understanding of music is analyzed by the Pearson's coefficient of correlation.
The findings in this study are as follows:
First, the musical environment of home in Korea is on a low level comparatively. There is no significant correlation between the musical environment of home and father's age which is one of the attributions of parents' background. The higher parents' academic career and their monthly income are, the higher the level of the musical environment of home is. When child's parents has a professional job and child's mother has a job, the level of the musical environment of home is higher.
Second, the girl-group is superior to the boy-group in terms of the understanding of music in the children at the age of 5 in Korea.
Third, there is the correlation between the understanding of music and musical atmosphere of home in the girl-group. On the other hand, there is the correlation between the understanding of music and the musical instrument of home or the musical career of parents in boy-group. Relating to age, academic career, job and monthly income of home among the attributions of parents' background, there is the correlation between the musical environment of home and child's understanding of music but there is no correlation between child's understanding of music and the presence of mother's job.
