I. The purpose of the Study
As the traditional viewpoint on the offering has been changed and the role of women has been intensified in the modem society, the effort to reexamine the nature of the increasing only children has been enhanced, In the meanwhile the negative aspect of only children has not been throughly examined, hence it has been regarded based on the unjustified prejudice. Assuming no difference between the only children and sibling children and even more self-esteem for the side of only children, this study identifies the arena of sociability and self-esteem and compares such a relationship between the only children and sibling children.
II. The Problem of the Study
This study tries to tackle the following questions:
1. Is there any significant difference in sociability between the only children and sibling children, specifically the following four dimensions: cooperativeness, understanding others, autonomy, personal adaptablilty ?
2. Is there any significant difference in self-esteem between the only children and sibling children, specifically the following four dimensions: self-esteem in recognition, self-esteem in body, self-esteem in society, self-esteem in family ?
3. Is there any significant relationship between sociability and self-esteem for the only children and sibling children ?
III. Methods and Procedures
The case of this study is a total of 174 in Taegu City, which consists of 87 only children three groups of 5-7 years old) and 87 sibling children as a control groups. As the test tool for sociability this study reconstructed the tool used by Suh Jeong-Hee(1995) which was originally developed in Jiao & Ji(1986), while as the the test tool for self-esteem this study reconstructed the tool used by Lee Hyo-Sook(1992) which was originally developed in Hartup(1984).
For the sociability test, the respective teacher for each groups recorded the usual activity. For the self-esteem test. the researcher conducted a personnel interview. For the analysis, according to the existence of brothers or sisters/sex/age, this study identified the mean and standard deviation and checked t-test, and examined the relationship between sociability and self-esteem using Person's moment correlation coefficient. Further this study conducted the reliability test for the tool by Cronbach's a.
IV. Results
The findings are as follows:
1, The sociability is found to be significantly higher in sibling children rather than only children. Regarding sex, the sociability of girls is higher than boys in the dimensions of cooperativeness, understanding others, autonomy, while sociability of boys is higher in Personal adaptability dimension.
2. For the self-esteem, there has been found no significant difference between the only children and sibling children. Regarding sex, self-esteem of boys is higher in self-esteem in body, while girls in self-esteem in family.
3. For the relationship between sociablity and self-esteem, there has been found no difference between the only children and sibling children.
