At fist, the Book of Odes was called poetry or Three Hundred's Poetry(詩三百). And its name is originated from the Book of His-tpru bu Samachon. Also te Four Book which were also completed during the Song era contined intensively the viewpoint of the Chutzu's doctrines. And poetry has been considered not so much literature in these days as the criterion of church and state, and of moral.
By the way, because Confucianism regards reality and human as important, the poetry quoted in the Four Books have strong actuality. Therefore the aim of this paper is to study general poetic criticism of Confucianism through seventy-three poems quoted in the Four Books, which are comsisted of six poem from the Analects of confusius, thirty-seven poems from the Great Learning, fifteen poems from the Golden Men. The Most quoted poem of them is the volume of king Moon, which expresses intention to build the desirable society through his virtue. The basic aim of confucianism is to expand from moral training to the government of the world. Especially, Confucius regards artistic demension as important first of all. Poetry has to cultivate moral characters of the individual by self-culture, and essentially has to be expanded socially. That is, the poetry quoted in the Four Books has three functions.-
1. to cultivate individual pure heart.
2. to elightem king, subject, and society.
3. to satireze underrsifable society be generally strong critic mind.
Therefore, this papaer was contributed to examine the poetic criticism of Confucianism by the poetry quoted in the Four Books, and social functions it has.
