The shamanism (shaman customs and services) originated from "Checheon Euishik", a religious service to heaven which is one of agricultural ceremonies performed by the ancient tribal nations. This religious service were handed down to Kokuryo Kingdom as "Dongmaeng", to Ruyeo Kingdom as "Yeongko" and to Yei Kingdom as "Mucheon", and those who presided over the sacrifices for such services were shamans, and the Tangun(the founding father of the Korea) himself might be the shaman. Such customs were handed down to the era of the three states(kingdoms of Silla, Kokuryo, and Baekje), and we may know that Cha Cha-Woong, the name of the King of Silla, is the title of King and also is the title of shaman.
In the Kokuryo age, the social position of shamanism began to be downgraded due to influence of buddhism and confucianism. In the Chosun(Korea) age, the shamanism still remained in a low-class social position as before, but the shamanism was prevailing in royal courts and commoners' houses especially among the women.
And thus, national shaman system was established, and the service for praying for rain and the service for tutelary deity were performed through the national shamans, who were also recognized as shaman doctor who cures disease. Classifying the ages of the shaman dresses based on such historical facts, the shaman priests and the rulers were holding equal power in the unity of shaman and state during the ancient times and the three state era. In view of the bronze remains and gold crown remains of the ages, we may vaguely guess the shaman dress style. And also, in the age of Koryo, though there is no remains for that age, we may guess from the literatures that the shaman dress style might be similar to that of the present times in view of fixed form of exaracism and the male shaman in the female shaman dress of today.
Even in the age of Chosun, however, as the concrete data of "Munyeo Shinmudo" (Illustration of shaman dancing) and "Mudang Naeryuk" (History of shaman) published by Shin Yoon-Bok in that age are available, we can find that the shaman dress of the old ages are similar to that of today.
In this study, the shaman dresses of Kim Keum-hwa, a noted shaman of Hwanghae Province, currently used for shaman service, are selected to examine the dress styles, their colors and patterns, through which we have found that there are various kinds of shaman dresses, such as "Kwajal", "Namsam", "Mongduri", "Jangkunpalbe" and "Malaeki", "Kwandi", Shinjangot", "Cheongsang Cheonnyeo Nasang", "Jangsam and "Kasa", Kyeonu Jiknye Ot", "Dopo", Namchima", "Jeokori", "Sobok, and other shaman tools. The colors used for the shaman dresses are indigo blue, yellow, white, green and some others with patterns of 10 long-live symbols, such as Chinese Phoenix, Lotus Flower, Peony Blossom, good luck wishing words, and some other patterns, and in the technique of making such symbols, embroidering, gold plating and other techniques were used.
As we have seen the above, the shamanism and shaman dresses must be purely our own one inherited from our preceded ancestors, but it is true that the inferior position of the shamanism could be hardly avoided in social standing under the indifference and disregard as it was suppressed by foreign-imported culture.
Now, we think that now is the time for us to upgrade its social dignity not in view of religious aspect, but in view of folk culture aspect, and it is desirable to make systematic arrangement for that purpose.
