This study aims at finding out the effect of M.E program to Korean couples. M.E. program is widely employed as one of the group counselling programs all over the world. This researcher compared and analyzed the differences in communication types and marriage satisfaction between the married couples who had experienced M.E. program and those who had not.
The issues discussed in this study are as follows:
(l) Is there any significant difference in communication types between the married couples who have undergone M.E. program and those who have not?
(2) Is there any significant difference between the two kinds ofmarried couples in satisfaction at marriage?
(3) Is there any significant difference in communication types and marriage satisfaction between the couples who have participated in the program following M.E.program and those who have not?
The subjects of the research are 126 couples who have been through M.E program and 98 couples who have not. All of the couples live inSeoul.
The instruments of the study are Communication Types Questionnaire which was devised by Hawkins C. (1977, 1980) and complemented by Won, Hyo Chong and some items selected through the preliminary survey from Marriage Satisfaction Ruler which was developed by Lee, Yon Choo.
The data are analyzed through SPSS and verified by X² -test, T-test and F-test according to the different issues.
The results of the study are as follows:
First, there is a significant difference between the husbands who have been through M.E. program and those who have not in communication types. (P<.0l) However, wives do not show any significant differences.
In case of verbal expression, there is no significant difference between the two groups. There is a significant difference between the groups : husbands (P<.0l), wives (P<.05), coupless (P<.0l) in the degree that they express their emotional states.
Second, there is a significant difference between wives of the two groups in satisfaction at marriage (P<.05). There are some significant differences between the two kinds of the couples in there factors such as recognition of married life (P<.0l), social and psychological partnership (P<.05), and respect for the spouce (P<.05).
Third, no significant difference in communication types and satisfaction at marriage can be seen between the couples who have proceeded to the program following M.E. program and those who have not.
