This study was attempted to analyze the effect of group couseling on self-concept. This task was accomplished by utilizing the meta-analysis technique of research integration as defined by Glass(1976).
Meta-analysis is a statistical analysis of the summary findings of many empirical studies. Its purpose is to draw reliable and general conclusions from a large and complex body of literature on a common topic.
This study set the following problem to be answered.
Problem 1 : This study is to find out the effect sizes of overall group counseling on self-concept in Korea.
Problem 2 : Group counselings categorize the same thing, and categorized group counselings compare effect sizes.
Problem 3 : This study is to find out the differences of effect by counselee's age and sex.
Problem 4 : This study is to find out that effect of counseling influences situation variables. Situation variables are number of group counseling's counselee, one time of group counseling, total times of group counseling, group counseling influences only self-concept or self-concept and another variables.
Problem 5 : This study is to find that effect of group counsling coutinues.
Problem 6 : This study researches that effects of group counseling are influenced by kinds of self-concept test.
This thesis analyzes the existing 74 theses of the field, effect sizes came from 104 control groups (experimental groups) and total experimental group size was based on 1820 persons. From empirical theses of group counseling on self-concept, 103 effect sizes were calculated and used for comparison according to variables which have been suggested to have effects of group counseling on self-concept.
The standard procedures analogous was used in meta-analysis, and another statistics method appling for this study were T-test, ANOVA.
The results of this study are as follows:
1. The overall average effect size yieled a value of .998 thus group counseling program was effective in the improvement of self-concept, especially academic self-concept showed the highest average effect size.
2. Among the five cells of group counseling, self growth learning program showed the highest average effect size(1.638).
3. When group counseling counselees was from forth to sixth grade elementary' school student, average effect size was the highest. And when group counseling were organized only make student showed the highest average effect size.
4. It was showed the highest average effect size that experimental groups met 16-20 times, one time of group counseling was 60-120 minutes, and counselee number was 6-15 persons.
5. The effect of group counseling was coutinuous one.
6. The kinds of self-concept test does not influence effect of group counseling on self-concept.
