The purpose of this study was to find out the relationship among self-concept, attributional style and depression. For the above purpose of study, the following hypotheses were set on the base of the antecedents.
<Hypothesis Ⅰ> Atributional styles will be diffirence according to self-concept.
Ⅰ-1 According to the affirmative and negative self-concept and atributional situations there will be the difference of attributional styles.
<Hypothesis Ⅱ> Depression wiII be difference according to self-concept.
Ⅱ-1 Depression will be relatively higher in negative self-concept group.
Ⅱ-2 According to the dimensions of self-concept there will be difference of dimensions of depression.
<Hypothesis Ⅲ> Depression will be difference with attributional styles.
Ⅲ-1 In the case of low controllability and internal, stable and global arrtibution, depression will be high.
Ⅲ-2 The relationship between negative attributional situation and depression will be higher than positive attributional situation.
<Hypothesis Ⅳ> In the case of negative condition and specific area, the relationship among self-concept, attributional style, and depression will be higher.
Ⅳ-1 The relationship between negative academic self-concept and self-critical depression will higher in the negative achievemental situation.
Ⅳ-2 The relationship between negative non-academic self-concept and dependent depression will be higher in the negative interpersonal situation.
To investigate above hypotheses data were collected randomly at high schools in Seoul and Kyung-gi. Finaly male 287, female 253, total 540 data were used for analysis.
Used instruments are self-concept questionnaire(SCQ), attributional styles questionaire(ASQ), and depression experiences questionaire(DEQ).
SCQ is constructed four pionts scale, 50 items, academic and non-academic self-concept as subdimensions. ASQ is constructed seven points scale and 12 situations that negative/positive and achievemental/interpersonal situations. A situation has four: internal-external, stable-unstable, global-specific, controllable-uncontrollabe dimensions. DEQ is constructed seven points scale, 66items, and dimensions of dependency andself criticism.
To validate the instruments cronbach-α and lotated factor pattern were produced. The results show that academic self-concept is α=.86 and non academic self-concept is α=.85, and dependency is α=.74, self-critisism is α=.76 in DEQ, α=.33 - α=.59 in ASQ.
The results of this study are as follow :
Hypothesis Ⅰ-1 was proved positive. Affermative self-concept group showed high controllability and high internal, stable and global attribution in positive situation. Negtive self-concept group showed low controllability and high internal, stable and global attribution in negative situation.
Hypothesis Ⅱ-1 was proved positive. Negative self-concept group showed higher depression(M=4.91) than affermative self-concept group(M=4.74), and the difference was significant.(P<.05)
Hypothesis Ⅱ-2 was proved negative. As the result the both of academic and non academic self-concept groups showed high self-critical depression.
Hypothesis Ⅲ was proved positive. As the result high internality, stability and globality group showed significantly high depression score. Also negative situation was B=.21, positive situation was B=.15. Therefore the relationship was signi ficantly higher in negative situations. (P=<.001)
Hypothesis Ⅳ-1 was proved generaly positive and hypothesis Ⅳ-2 was partly negative. As the result negative achievemental situation explaned extremely self-critical depression with 18.5% in negative academic self-concept, also dependent depression with 22.8% in negative non-academic self-concept. The power of explanation was weak.
The conclusion of this study are as follow :
First, the more affermative self-concept is, the higher controllability, internality, stablity and globality show in positive situation. The more negative self-concept is, the lower controllability and the higher internality stablity and globality show in negative situation. Therefore students attribut causes for success and failure in accordance with self-concept.
Second, the more negative self-concept, the more depression.
Third, the more internality stablity and globality and the lower controllability, the more depression.
