This thesis intends to understand the background of the production of Buddhist images and characteristics of their styles focusing upon the Buddhist images, with recorded dates, in the early Choson dynasty, especially in the period (1455-1494) between the reign of Se-jo when the Buddhism respect policy was extended and the reign of Sung-jong when the Confucian national system was completed.
The early Choson period was the time when the Buddhist association was arranged in large scale; the Confucian national system, based on Sungrihak (性理學), was accepted in the late Koryo dynasty, when all of the temples in the country were cleared except for 242 approved temples in Tae-jong reign, and Five Exoteric Buddhist Schools and two other sects:Cho-gye and Chun-tai(五敎兩宗) were unified into Soˇn-Jong and Kyo-joug(禪敎兩宗) in Se-jong reign. Even though Sungrihak(性理學) was accepted as a standard of politics, Buddhism which was led by the royal family secured its own power centering around the remaining temples:as shown in the cases of Tae-jo, who was a devout Buddhist, and of Se-jong who lightened Buddhist policy in his latter reign and of Se-jo who constantly extended the policy for Buddhism restoration, based on autocratic power.
The Buddhist images of this time were divided into the traditional groups succeeding the carving faction of the late Koryo and the other groups reflecting the exotic styles of Yu¨an(元) and Ming(明) of China. The graceful and noble sculptures depicted by the late Koryo elegant style were of the main stream of that time and were assumed to have a relationship in style because the Buddhist sculptors who had worked in the late Koryo period continued to work from their foundation in the Choson period. Analyzing sculptural trends of that time, the followings are found:the upper part of dhoti(裙衣) raised above bosom was changed into straight line, usnisa(육계) gradually raised and the central bead(중앙계주) of previous time was developed into the top bead(정상계주) as it was moved to the top.
There exist Buddhist images, which show the inflow of foreign styles, into Korea; wood Amitabha in Huˇksuk-sa temple(黑石寺), gilt-bronze seated Buddha in Sujong-sa temple(水鐘寺) donated, by concubines of Sung-jong (1493), and by the Queen of Sun-jo(1628), and the wood Amitaba seated image in the National Museum of Korea made in 1482(成化銘). In these statues, we can find not only the expression of double usnisa, the stressed top central bead and the nipples but also the change of the body proportion of raised statue and the sense of shape. For admitting and reflecting such foreign styles, it could be possible to compare the styles more systemically if the contemporary Chinese Buddhist images of Ming and Ch'ing were studied more actively.
But the beautiful and noble Buddhist images produced by the sponsors of the government and the royal family had appeared until the mid of 16th century. The late Choson sculptures, produced mainly by the priest painters in the local areas, showed the limit of carving techniques and local styles. These stylistic changes may have been resulted from the changes of Buddhist cult and the decrease of diversity on the iconographic types. Besides, after the two great wars when the Ch'an Buddhism(禪宗) took power, the changes of aesthe tics of the contemporary people also seems to have taken a role in these changes. Thus the simple local aspects were represented in the sculptures of the latter part of the choson dynasty.
