This study begins from the recognition that, although considerable scholarship on the Earthly Branches (地支) has accumulated, most previous studies have remained dispersed across individual topics such as their origins and etymological meanings, monthly ordinances (月令), hidden stems (地藏干), combinations and clashes, the twelve zodiac animals, and Five-Phase correspondences, or have treated them only partially in relation to other theories in Myeongri studies. In other words, the Earthly Branches have long been regarded as important interpretive elements in Myeongri, yet their structure and functions have not been sufficiently organized into a single integrated interpretive framework. Accordingly, this study reconstructs the Earthly Branches not merely as the twelve sequential markers of time or as discrete items in conventional relational schemes, but as interpretive units through which Myeongri reads temporality, relationality, and concrete events in the real world. To this end, the study examines the Earthly Branches on three levels: numerological structure, seasonal theory, and symbolic interpretation, and further investigates how these three levels are integrally realized through the relational operations of punishment, clash, combination, and breakage Methodologically, this research is based on textual study and synthesizes classical sources and modern scholarship through structural analysis and hermeneutic reconstruction. Primary sources include the Zhouyi, the “Yueling” chapter of the Liji, Shuowen Jiezi, Lunheng, Yuanhai Ziping, Ziping Zhenquan, and Han Dong-seok’s The Principles of Cosmic Change. Secondary sources include studies on numerological cosmology, monthly ordinances, zodiac symbolism, and the theory of Xing-Chong-He-Po. The findings are as follows. First, from a numerological perspective, the Earthly Branches can be understood not as a mere sequential arrangement but as structural units in which forms of change embedded in numbers are actualized in temporal stages. When read through Han Dong-seok’s numerological theory together with the waxing-and-waning structure of the twelve monthly hexagrams, the Earthly Branches can be reconstructed as formal expressions in which the generation, differentiation, convergence, and transformation of yin and yang are articulated in time. Second, from the perspective of seasonal theory, the Earthly Branches constitute qualitative temporal positions in which natural timing and normative seasonal order are condensed. The order presented in the “Yueling” was later incorporated into Myeongri through month-branch-centered interpretation and geokguk (格局) theory. Accordingly, the Earthly Branches came to function not simply as markers of months, but as key indicators of the concrete conditions and waxing or waning vitality present at the time of birth. Third, from a symbolic perspective, the Earthly Branches acquire experiential concreteness through the ecology and cultural memory of the twelve zodiac animals. The zodiac animals are not merely remnants of folk zodiac culture, but symbolic systems formed through the conjunction of the temporality of the Branches with long-term human observation of nature, ecological perception, and cultural meaning-making. The significance of this study does not lie in presenting these three levels side by side. Numerological analysis reveals the internal structure of the Earthly Branches; seasonal theory explains the qualitative temporal conditions in which that structure is situated; and symbolic interpretation renders it visible as an ecological and cultural form within the lifeworld. These three levels are then brought together through the relational operations of Xing, Chong, He, and Po. Xing (刑) is understood as the maturation of events through accumulated excess, pressure, repetition, and distortion within a structure; Chong (沖) as abrupt transformation caused by direct collision between different orders; He (合) as the formation of a new relational unit through mediation and coordination between unlike structures; and Po (破) as the weakening and cracking of the contact surface of an already formed or forming order. In this sense, Xing-Chong-He-Po is not merely a conventional formula for judging auspiciousness or inauspiciousness, but a relational grammar through which the structure, temporality, and symbolism of the Earthly Branches are translated into concrete events and transformations. Taken together, this study reorganizes the accumulated individual discussions on the Earthly Branches along the three axes of numerological structure, seasonal theory, and symbolism, and reconnects them through the relational operations of Xing-Chong-He-Po, thereby demonstrating the possibility of an integrated interpretation of the Earthly Branches. Its significance lies in its attempt to reorganize the various aspects of the Earthly Branches elucidated in previous studies into a single interpretive framework grounded in structure and concrete reality.
