This study multidimensionally examines the ideal of the seonbi (Confucian
scholar) held by Uam Song Si-yeol (1607–1689), a central figure in
17th-century Joseon Neo-Confucianism and the leader of the Noron faction,
through his character criticism, while exploring its contemporary and modern
significance as well as its limitations.
Uam’s character criticism displays distinct characteristics depending on
whether it evaluates past Daoist scholars (dohakja) or contemporary figures.
First, in his criticism of past scholars, Uam transcended school lineages and
factional colors to revere the noble character and practical righteousness (uiri)
of past sages; however, he also attempted a scholarly overcoming of them
using the strict standard of Orthodox Zhu Xi Scholasticism. While showing

personal reverence and courtesy to Toegye Yi Hwang, Uam sought to
textually verify and overcome what he viewed as philological errors in
Toegye’s theory of the mutual emanation of li and qi (igi-hobal-seol).
Regarding Nammyeong Jo Sik, Uam actively admired his frost-like spirit and
practical righteousness, yet criticized his lack of depth in Zhu Xi’s theoretical
formulations and his leaning toward Lao-Zhuang philosophy. Conversely, he
elevated his own teacher, Yulgok Yi I, to the status of a "later-day Zhu Xi,"
striving to absolutely maintain and inherit Yulgok's philosophy of
righteousness and scholarly lineage. Second, his criticism of contemporary
figures focused primarily on strict judgments regarding the orthodoxy of
scholarship, practical political righteousness, and personal conduct. While he
revered his teacher Kim Jip, the perfecter of ritual studies (yehak), as a
symbol of the orthodox lineage (dotong), he condemned Baekho Yun Hyu as
an ideological traitor (samun-nanjeok) for challenging Zhu Xi's authority and
developing independent thought. Furthermore, he engaged in the Hoeni
Dispute (Hoeni-sibi) with Yun Seon-geo and his son Yun Jeung, clashing
clash critically over differences in their views on life and death and their
theories of moral duty (myeongbun-ron).
The characteristics of Uam's ideal of the seonbi derived from this criticism
lie in the "unity of knowledge and action" (hakhaeng-ilchi) and "practical
righteousness" (uiri), which involves carrying out one's moral convictions
even at the cost of life and death. To Uam, a seonbi was a rigid practitioner
who protected orthodox Zhu Xi Neo-Confucianism (jeonghak) and
meticulously manifested the righteousness of honoring the Zhou Dynasty
(jonju-uiri) and the Great Righteousness of the Spring and Autumn Annals
(chunchu-daeu) in reality.
Nevertheless, Uam's ideal of the seonbi and his critical perspective possess
both historical and modern limitations and significance.
As for contemporary limitations, his absolutist attitude toward defending- 74
the orthodoxy of Yulgok's scholarship paradoxically stifled the inherent
openness and reformative nature of Yulgok's academic traditions, leading to
dogmatic conservatism. Additionally, his uncompromising, dichotomous
criticism intensified factional strife and deepened ideological exclusivism.
Despite this, his contemporary significance lies in the fact that he elevated
the philosophical level of Neo-Confucianism to its peak amidst systemic
crises and infused a powerful sense of moral tension and the spirit of
righteousness throughout society.
In terms of modern significance, his philosophy offers a compelling ethical
standard of consistency between speech and action for today's intellectuals
facing spiritual crises amidst material affluence. It also presents a model of
principled leadership that values public good over private interest. Although
limited by rigidity, it is evaluated as a heavy intellectual legacy that prompts
reflection on "the path of living humanely" and "the responsibility of a
conscientious intellectual" in an era of confused values.
