This study aims to conduct an in-depth analysis of the theories of Motion and Stillness (Dong-Jung Theory, 動靜說) and the Theory of Illness and Medicine (Byeong-Yak Theory, 病藥說) in Mingli Zhengzong (命理正宗), authored by Zhang Nan during the Ming dynasty, in order to elucidate the fundamental principles of interpretation in Chinese fate studies. The Dong-Jung Theory functions as a criterion for assessing the movements and stagnation of the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches, as well as the dynamics of yin-yang and the Five Elements, while the Byeong-Yak Theory diagnoses imbalances in the Four Pillars through metaphors of illness and proposes corrective energies, or “medicinal spirits, ” to restore harmony.
The research methodology combines literature review and case studies. The study critically examines the concepts, structures, and key arguments of the two theories within Mingli Zhengzong, analyzes their significance and function from the perspective of Ziying Fate Studies (Ja-Pyeong School), and applies the theories to actual Four Pillars charts to assess their practical effectiveness and interpretive potential.
Findings demonstrate that the Dong-Jung and Byeong-Yak theories serve not only as conceptual frameworks but also as practical guidelines, enabling systematic diagnosis and correction of the flow and balance of energies in a chart. The study also highlights the substantial influence of these theories on subsequent developments in Chinese fate studies. This research contributes to a comprehensive understanding of the theoretical and practical value of these concepts and proposes a structured interpretive framework applicable in contemporary education and professional practice of Chinese astrology.
