This study examines the Feng Shui characteristics of royal temples (wonchal, 願刹) associated with the royal tombs (wangneung, 王陵) of the Joseon Dynasty by analyzing their site selection based on the principles of Feng Shui. Among the temples attached to Joseon royal tombs, six extant temples enshrining kings and queens who actually ruled the nation were selected as research subjects. The study investigates the royal process of designating these temples, their historical development to the present day, and analyzes their geomantic locations based on their current conditions.
When Hanyang was established as the capital at the founding of the Joseon dynasty and the royal palace was constructed, Feng Shui, which served as the ideological foundation, was one of the disciplines taught in the Sip-hak (十學), the educational institutions for subjects required in the state examinations for government appointments, and was managed at the national level. As verified in historical records, Feng Shui was the most important factor in determining the site of the royal tombs. Once a royal tomb site was selected, a wonchal was established nearby to manage the tomb precinct, provide ritual offerings, and pray for the repose of past kings and the peace of the royal family. The selection of the wonchal was directly supervised by the royal household, and in most cases, it was administered by the head of the royal court ladies’ department. Therefore, the specific procedures and principles for designating a wonchal were not clearly recorded in the literature. From the early Joseon period, Feng Shui exerted a profound influence on politics and on the overall restructuring of the national territory. Consequently, it is reasonable to infer that the wonchal, established to protect royal tombs and to pray for the well-being of the royal family, were also selected based on geomantic principles. Furthermore, it can be assumed that the reason these temples have not been destroyed despite numerous national wars and continue to exist as major temples today lies largely in their geomantic advantages. Based on the hypothesis that geomantic principles played a crucial role in the founding and reconstruction of the wonchal, multiple on-site investigations were conducted to examine the surrounding mountain forms and watercourses. The form-based validity was verified through Feng Shui theory, classical geomantic texts, and various research materials. Furthermore, the sitting and facing orientation was measured several times using a geomantic compass on-site, and the most appropriate orientation was selected to analyze the liqi (Compass School). Through this process, both the hyeongse (Form School) and liqi (energy-based) theories were comprehensively reviewed.
In selecting the research subjects of the wonchal associated with the Joseon royal tombs, this study referred to previous papers on royal wonchal. For empirical analysis, primary historical sources from the Joseon dynasty, such as the 『Joseon Wangjo Sillok』 and the 『Seungjeongwon Ilgi』, were used as basic materials. For the theoretical verification of the geomantic siting of the wonchal, the hyeongse (form-based theory) analysis was conducted based on classical Feng Shui texts such as 『Cheongo-gyeong』, 『Geumnang-gyeong』, 『Injasuji』, and 『Seolsimbu』. The liqi (energy-based theory) analysis was carried out with reference to the theories presented in 『Hyeongong Biji』, 『Simsihyeongonghak』, 『Hyeongong Pungsu』, 『Yangtaek Samyo』, and 『Jirio-gyeol』.
Through a review of historical literature, it was confirmed that in the process of selecting sites for the wonchal of the Joseon royal tombs, high-ranking officials personally conducted multiple site inspections to verify the suitability of the locations and reported their findings to the royal court for discussion. In some cases, such as Heungcheonsa and Yongjusa, the king himself visited the proposed sites to inspect the locations. These records indicate that the royal court placed great importance on the geomantic siting of the wonchal and that the selection process was carried out with great prudence. The locations of the wonchal were determined to be in close proximity to the royal tombs so as to facilitate the protection of the tombs and the smooth supply of ritual offerings. Some temples were reconstructed on pre-existing sites, such as Heungcheonsa, Suguksa, Silleuksa, and Bongeunsa, while others were newly established, including Heungcheonsa, Jeonginsa, Yongjusa, and Bongseonsa.
In the classification of the case studies, the criteria were based on the hyeongse (form-based) theory derived from classical Feng Shui texts. Heungcheonsa was identified as a jangpungguk (wind-protecting configuration) in which the dispersed qi was bound and accumulated at the meridian spot. Suguksa also exhibited a jangpungguk (wind-protecting configuration) type, while Yongjusa represented another jangpungguk (wind-protecting configuration) where auspicious qi gathered at the meridian spot. Silleuksa was identified as a deuksuguk (water-embracing configuration accumulating vital qi), where the Yeogang River functions as the ansan (protective rear mountain), safeguarding the vital qi at the meridian spot. Bongseonsa was classified as a jangpung–deuksuguk (wind-protecting and water-embracing configuration), where the Bongseonsa Stream encircles the four mountains, thereby assisting in the accumulation of auspicious qi. Bongeunsa also represents a jangpung–deuksuguk (wind-protecting and water-embracing configuration), in which the inner stream merges with the outer stream, and together they flow toward the Tancheon River. Accordingly, the sites were classified into three types: jangpungguk (wind-protecting configuration) — Heungcheonsa, Suguksa, and Yongjusa; deuksuguk (water-embracing configuration accumulating vital qi) — Silleuksa; and jangpung–deuksuguk (combined wind-protecting and water-embracing configuration) — Bongseonsa and Bongeunsa. In analyzing the geomantic siting of each wonchal, the yongse-ron (theory of dragon veins), hyeolse-ron (theory of the vital point), sase-ron (theory of the four guardian forms), and suse-ron (theory of water flow) were applied within the hyeongse (form-based) theory, while the hyungong Feng Shui (Form-School Feng Shui), yangtaek samyo (Yang –Zhai- San- Yao), and jiri ogyeol (Di-Li- Wu-Jue 88 Direction) orientation principles were employed within the liqi (energy-based) theory.
As a result of this study, it was found that the wonchal associated with the Joseon royal tombs were generally located on auspicious sites corresponding to the hyeongse-based (form-based) geomantic principles, and that the liqi-based (energy-based) analyses also mostly indicated favorable configurations. In addition, there were cases where supplementary structures such as halls or stupas were employed to compensate for areas lacking geomantic qi. These geomantic considerations likely contributed to the continued existence of the temples over several centuries without being abandoned or relocated.
Through this study, it was confirmed that the wonchal of the Joseon royal tombs were not merely religious facilities but systematically planned auxiliary structures established from the early stages of royal tomb construction. They were built on auspicious sites selected according to Feng Shui principles and situated in geomantically favorable locations, while the arrangement of the halls followed the principles of yangtaek Feng Shui. This reveals the integration of Buddhist architecture and geomantic thought during the Joseon period and provides academic insight into the correlation between architecture and Feng Shui philosophy of the era. Furthermore, it is expected that such studies on yangtaek Feng Shui will offer meaningful implications for the orientation and design of contemporary architecture.
