This study examines the correspondence between the Huasui Weiji (Fire over Water, 火水未濟) hexagram of the I Ching (Zhouyi, 周易) and the notion of Flowing (Liudong, 流動) in Sikong Tu’s Twenty- Four Poetic Styles (Ershisi Shipin, 二十四詩品), aiming to elucidate the shared aesthetics of incompletion, flow, and becoming in East Asian thought. Both texts have long served as foundational sources across philosophy, literature, painting, calligraphy, and aesthetic theory, and they are regarded as canonical texts representing, respectively, the cosmological worldview of Changes and the poetic aesthetic consciousness of beauty. A comparative reading of these traditions offers insight into the intrinsic structure and enduring logic of East Asian aesthetics.
The hexagram Fire over Water creates a state of tension through the opposition of water (Kan) and fire (Li), embodying an incomplete moment that continually demands transformation and renewal. This configuration reflects the fundamental principles of bianyi (change, 變易) and processuality (guochengxing, 過程性) of the I Ching, presenting a dynamic order grounded not in static harmony but in harmony through opposition. Conversely, Flowing employs images of movement, rotation, and recurrence to depict a world in which contrasting elements-stillness and motion, light and shadow, fullness and lack—nterdependently generate new meaning. The aesthetic space of Flowing resists fixed form, positioning movement and flux as the primary locus of meaning.
This study demonstrates that the two texts share a structural correspondence along four major axes: (1)harmony within opposition (2)the aesthetics of incompletion (3)a cyclical conception of time and (4)a kinetic ontology. Harmony within opposition reveals conflict as a generative force; the aesthetics of incompletion highlights the openness central to East Asian artistic thought; cyclical temporality emphasizes continuity through repetition and change rather than linear progression; and kinetic ontology conceives existence as an unfolding process rather than a fixed substance. Together, these correspondences reveal a shared mode of world-understanding that reflects a fundamental East Asian philosophical paradigm.
Furthermore, this study analyzes literary and pictorial works spanning traditional embodiments (Tao Yuanming, Li Bai, Wang Wei, Du Fu, and Guo Xi), premodern and modern transformations (Dong Qichang, Shitao, Jeong Seon, Kim Jeong-hui, and Yun Seon-do), and contemporary developments (Kim Jeong-ran, Song Soo-nam, Hong Seok-chang, Kim Ho-deuk, and Lim Hyun-lak). Through this analysis, it elucidates how the structural and aesthetic correspondence between Fire over Water (Weiji, 未濟) and Liudong (Flow) has been realized and transformed as an artistic principle within poetry, literati painting, and ink art.
In conclusion, this study clarifies the conceptual interface between East Asian philosophy and aesthetics by analyzing the correspondence between Fire over Water and Flowing. It identifies opposition and harmony, incompletion and transformation, and circulation and flow as fundamental aesthetic principles that permeate East Asian art, demonstrating how classical texts and artistic forms co-constitute one another. This provides a theoretical foundation for future research in East Asian aesthetics.
