Human postural control is a complex function achieved through the integration of multiple sensory inputs and neuromuscular regulation. With aging, declines in sensory feedback and the ability to regulate muscle activity increase dependence on visual information and make it more difficult to maintain balance. In particular, there is a lack of electromyography (EMG)-based studies that quantitatively compare postural control strategies between older and young adults under conditions of visual deprivation. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of visual deprivation on postural performance, trunk and lower-limb muscle activity, EMG frequency characteristics, and intermuscular coherence in young and older women.
Participants were 20 older women (age: 66.6 years, height: 155.5 cm, body weight: 57.9 kg, body mass index: 24.0 kg/m², body fat percentage: 33.3%) and 17 young women (age: 23.5 years, height: 161.0 cm, body weight: 53.8 kg, body mass index: 20.8 kg/m², body fat percentage: 29.4%) residing in Y City, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea. The participants performed tandem stance and single-leg stance tasks under eye-open and eye-closed conditions, while surface EMG signals were recorded bilaterally from 26 trunk and lower-limb muscles. EMG amplitudes were normalized to the percentage of maximal voluntary isometric contraction (%MVIC), and power in the 0–15 Hz, 15–30 Hz, and 30–60 Hz frequency bands, as well as intermuscular coherence between muscle pairs, were calculated. Differences according to group (older vs. young) and visual condition (eye-open vs. eye-closed) were analyzed, with the level of statistical significance set at p < 0.05.
In both tasks, stance time was significantly reduced under eye-closed compared with eye-open conditions, and in single-leg stance, older women exhibited shorter stance times than young women, indicating more pronounced balance impairment under visual deprivation. Regarding EMG amplitude and frequency characteristics, visual deprivation and increased task difficulty led to increases in %MVIC and low-, mid-, and high-frequency power in the abdominal, lumbar, thigh, and shank segments in both groups, with these increases being more extensive and pronounced in older women. In some segments, significant group × visual condition interactions were observed, such that under visual deprivation older women showed higher muscle activity in the lumbar and lower-limb segments than young women.
Intermuscular coherence analysis revealed frequency bands exceeding the threshold primarily in hip–thigh and thigh–shank muscle pairs. As visual input was removed or task difficulty increased to single-leg stance, older women exhibited expanded coherence not only in the low-frequency band but also in the beta and high-frequency bands, and greater coherence magnitude in the same muscle pairs compared with young women.
These findings suggest that, under conditions of visual deprivation, older women recruit greater muscle activity and more pronounced local intermuscular synchronization than young women to maintain postural stability, relying particularly on compensatory strategies centered on the hip and lower-limb segments. Future research should include men and a broader range of age groups to clarify age- and sex-related differences in postural control strategies, and incorporate dynamic tasks such as walking and turning to further explore balance control in ecologically valid situations. In addition, to improve balance in older adults with high visual dependence, postural control training that includes visual deprivation tasks, together with exercise interventions that facilitate efficient coordination between the trunk and lower limbs, may be necessary.
