The purpose of this study is to investigate relation between children's problem hehaviors and their parents' personality characteristics. Numerous previous studies have shown that children's behavior problems are closely associated with parents' patterns of child rearing practice and of behavior control.
However, little research has, in Korea, been done as to relation between parents' personality pattern and children's behavior problems.
The research hypotheses tested in the present study are as follows:
1. Children's problem behaviors are related with fathers' personality profiles.
2. Children's problem behaviors are also related with mothers' personality profiles.
3. Children's problem behaviors are related with parents' eductional standard, status of economic living, and religion.
To assess parents' personality characteristics, the California Psychological Inventory was administered to parents of children who were also administered to Achenbach's Child Behavior checklist (adapted and revised). Items for identifying parents' eductional standard, status of economic living and religion were included in the checklist.
Children sampled were one hundred and five tifth grade children who attended three independent public elementary schools. Also both of two sides of parents of these children were sampled (Respondents of one side of parents were excluded in this study). Therefore total number of parent subjects was two hundred and ten.
The data were analyzed through the SPSS computer program to obtain frequency, percentile, mean, standard deviation.
Pearson'ε γ and one way ANOVA
The findings were as the following:
1. Fathers' achievements via conformance are positively correlated with boys' schizoid behavior.
Fathers' tolerance, achievement via conformance, and achievement via independence are negatively related with boys' obsessive-compulsive behavior. Also fathers' sociability and self-acceptance are negatively associated with boys' hyperactivity.
2. Fathers' self-control, tolerance, achievement via independence are positively related with girls' socially withdrawal behavior. Fathers' sense of well-being, tolerance, achievement via conformance are negatively related with girls' schizoid-obsessive behavior.
Fathers' self acceptance is negatively associated with girls' hyperactive behavior. Fathers' achievement via independence and feminity are negatively correlated with girls' sexual behavor problem. Also fathers' self-acceptance, sense of well-being, responsibility, socialization, communality, achievement via conformance and intellectual efficiency are negatively associated with girls' delinquent behavior.
3. Mothers' self-acceptance is postively associated with boys' depressed behavior. Also mothers' sociability is positively related with boys' dilinquent behavior.
Mothers' sense of well-being and tolerance is negaively correlated boys' aggressive behavior.
4. Mothers' sense of well-being is negatively related with girls' scnizoid-obsessive behavior and delinquent behavior. Mothers' sociability, self-control, communality are also negatively associated with girls' delinquent behavior.
5. Boys' obessive-compulsive, socially withdrawn, hyperactive and dilinquent behavior are negatively correlated with parents' eductonal level. The parents' educational level is also negatively related with girls' socially withdrawn, hyperactive, delinquent and cruel behavior.
Children's problem behaviors are colsely associated with certain characteristics of both parents. Fathers' influences on children's problem behaviors are important as much as mothers' influences. In this study, it is shown that Fathers' personality characteristics tend to be more colsely associated with children's problem behaviors than mothers' personality characteristics and that parents' personality characteristics have differential impact on childrens problem behaviors. However, it is needed more sophiscated research to investigate this issue. Further researches are recommended in the study.
