The Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period (770 BC–221 BC) was a period of upheaval in which the existing feudal order was disintegrating and each vassal state attempted to establish its own legitimacy and ruling power in the midst of fierce competition for survival. During this period, each country desperately needed a philosophical foundation for establishing new ethics and social order, along with political, economic, and military reforms. The Hundred Schools of Thought were the answer to this demand.
Each school of thought presented educational solutions to restore social order and secure political legitimacy based on its own unique view of humanity and the world. Confucianism emphasized moral education centered on virtue and benevolence, while Mohism based its education on pragmatism and the egalitarian ideas of universal love. Taoism emphasized human autonomy and liberation through the obedience of inaction and nature, while Legalism pursued the establishment of order through law and punishment and utilized education as a means of governance. They all recognized education as the foundation of human formation and national stability, not simply the transmission of knowledge. However, each school of thought revealed limitations in the practicality and sustainability of education and education by excessively absolutizing their ideological positions or falling into idealistic and mechanistic biases. Confucianism flowed into moralism that was difficult to apply to real politics, Mohism failed to institutionalize, Taoism denied education itself, and Legalism remained a control-centered educational view that failed to consider the autonomy of the human mind. As a result, the Hundred Schools of Thought only partially resolved the challenges of the times, but failed to develop into a universal and integrated educational philosophy. The person who tried to overcome these limitations of the Hundred Schools of Thought was Xunzi. Based on the theory of human nature as evil, he acknowledged human selfishness and impulsiveness, while systematically arguing that anyone can change into a moral subject through repeated learning and education through rites and music. Xunzi inherited Confucianism’s virtue- based governance, but overcame its idealism, and accepted some of Legalism’s realistic ideology of order, emphasizing influence and internalization instead of coercion. He also thoroughly criticized the claims of Mohism and Taoism, and examined their suitability for reality and educational potential, thereby establishing an education system centered on rites and music that could overcome the confusion of the times. As such, he is evaluated as an ideological integrator who critically inherited the ideas of the Hundred Schools of Thought while comprehensively organizing and systematizing them. Today, our society is experiencing a structural crisis in various areas of education. This means that there are realistic conflicts or difficult points of balance between the weakening of teachers’ authority and excessive responsibility, the social demand that students’ human rights be strengthened and respected, and the certain responsibilities and attitudes that students must perform as learners and members of the school or civil society community. The tension between the protection of students’ human rights and their responsibility as learners, as well as the dismantling of home education, which is the stage before institutional education, requires fundamental reflection on the nature and purpose of education. This reality is deeply connected to the educational philosophy of ‘moral internalization through music and ritual’ and ‘education through repetition and habit formation’ emphasized by Xunzi.
Education is not simply the transfer of knowledge, but a place of ethical practice that regulates individual desires and makes them aware of their roles and responsibilities as social beings. Teachers should be more than mere conveyers of information; they should be objects of social respect as beings with moral character and the ability to influence others, and students should grow into subjects who can perform self-realization and community contribution in an environment where human rights are respected.
For example, Xunzi’s educational thought can be said to be the essence of ancient educational philosophy that critically accepted the teaching theory of the Hundred Schools of Thought and synthesized it into an integrated theory centered on music and ritual. This study aims to provide philosophical thinking that can reflect on the overall problems facing education today, including the weakening of teachers' authority, misuse of students' human rights, short-sighted educational policies, the disappearance of holistic education, and above all, the crisis of family education that is gradually disintegrating in modern society, through this ideological development process.
