This study analyzes and compares the Four Pillars (Saju, 四柱)—a traditional East Asian system of cosmological analysis based on birth data and rooted in the interactions of Yin-Yang (陰陽) and the Five Elements (五行)—of Princess Sukmyeong, Princess Sukjeong, and Princess Sukgyeong, daughters of King Hyojong (孝宗) of the Joseon Dynasty (朝鮮). It aims to identify structural commonalities and differences in their Saju and to examine how cosmological structure correlates with life outcomes, primarily through the conceptual lens of Che-Yong theory (體用論).
Che(體) refers to the fixed structural composition of the Four Pillars—the innate configuration of the eight characters—that symbolizes unchangeable external conditions such as social status. Yong(用), in contrast, denotes the dynamic operation of energies within this structure, manifesting through elemental interactions such as generation and control (生剋制化), as well as through transformations like combination (合), punishment (刑), clash (沖), destruction (破), and harm (害).
Princess Sukmyeong was born in the Tiger month (Inwol, 寅月) with a Jeonghwa (丁火, Yin Fire) day master. Her chart is supported by resource stars (印星), and although classified as weak (Shinyak, 身弱) due to draining influences from output and wealth stars, it maintains seasonal balance (Johoo, 調候), allowing her to live a peaceful life into old age. Princess Sukjeong, born in the Rat month (Jaweol, 子月), has a Gito (己土, Yin Earth) day master within a cold, damp (寒濕) elemental structure dominated by Metal (金) and Water (水). Despite the presence of Binghwa (丙火, Yang Fire) as a resource star, it was insufficient to regulate the cold energy, contributing to physical vulnerability and premature death. Princess Sukgyeong, also born in Inwol, has an Eulmok (乙木, Yin Wood) day master and a strong (Shingang, 身强) configuration, with excessive friend stars (Bigyeon, 比肩) and robber stars (Geobjae, 劫財), and weak Metal, resulting in an inability to control her dominant Wood energy and leading to instability and early death.
Structurally, Princess Sukmyeong’s chart is classified as Jeongin-gyeok (正印格, Proper Seal), Sukjeong’s as Pyeonjae-gyeok (偏財格, Partial Wealth), and Sukgyeong’s as Geobjae-gyeok (劫財格, Robbery Star). While Sukmyeong maintains thermal balance and meets her favorable elements (Yongshin, 用神) in timely major fortune cycles (Daewoon, 大運), the other two experience ongoing elemental imbalance and lack of support throughout their lives. All three princesses share reverse-flow Daewoon (Yeokhaeng, 逆行), commonly found in those born in Yang years (陽年) with Yin day masters (陰日干), symbolizing a reversed flow of cosmic time. This may imply non-linear life trajectories or unexpected disruptions.
Commonalities in their Cheare as follows:
First, all three have Yin day masters (Jeonghwa 丁火, Gito 己土, Eulmok 乙木), reflecting the calm and reserved disposition expected of royal women.
Second, all were born in Yang years but possess Yin day masters with reverse-flow Daewoon, suggesting a structural tension in temporal-spatial energy that may have influenced their external fate.
Third, Earth (土) elements appear strongly across all charts, symbolizing balance, receptivity, and the internalization of Confucian norms, aligning with the institutional roles of Joseon princesses.
By contrast, theYongelements reveal the following differences:
First, differences in body strength—Sukmyeong and Sukjeong (Shinyak) show passive adaptability, while Sukgyeong (Shingang) displays proactive and dominant tendencies.
Second, variations in seasonal energy balance—Sukjeong and Sukgyeong lack sufficient Fire (火) to counteract cold-damp conditions, whereas Sukmyeong maintains equilibrium.
Third, divergence in structural types and favorable elements—Sukmyeong's supportive cycles enhance life stability, while Sukjeong and Sukgyeong’s unfavorable elemental interactions correlate with vulnerability and early death.
In conclusion, the Che-Yong framework reveals how the princesses’ shared royal status (Che) accounts for structural similarities, while their individualized energy dynamics (Yong) explain their differing life paths. The Four Pillars system, through this dual lens, offers a compelling methodology for interpreting historical figures by linking cosmological structure to socio-cultural context.

Keywords: Saju (Four Pillars of Destiny, 四柱), Princess Sukmyeong, Princess Sukjeong, Princess Sukgyeong, Joseon Dynasty, Che-Yong theory (體用論), Yin-Yang (陰陽), Five Elements (五行), Myeongrihak (命理學)
