The Taesil culture of the Joseon nobleman called Sadaebu (Aristocracy in Joseon Dynasty) is a significant subject to reveal unique cultural and realistic aspects of traditional Korean society from an evolutionary perspective. Particularly, the processes and procedures involved in establishing the Taesil embrace very precious value as traditional culture and a highly societal act that aspires to lineage continuity and prosperity of descendants. Such cultural practices beyond discussions of individual survival and prosperity have deeply lived with Confucian values. The custom establishing Taesil not only proclaimed the sacred birth by itself but also revealed a formal indicator of an evolutionary perspective at that time, which is for dignity of life, delight, eternity, and expansion. In addition, it can also be interpreted as the efforts of Joseon nobleman called Sadaebu to instill Confucian order and ideology into their descendants and their family.
Every phase of Tasil establishment from site selection to construction was thoroughly determined, following Confucian principles. In other words, by demonstrating clearly the process that an unborn fetus is adopted as a member of the family, the process was utilized as a tool to emphasize legitimacy and continuity of the family. This reflects the social values and family-centered thought at that time, and it demonstrates that the Taesil, which is a life respect ideology, is not just a mere old heritage but an important link to help understand the identity and intellectual tradition of a society.
Therefore, as it examines Feng Shui aspect of Taesil culture in depth, this study conducts research on Ojukheon Mongryongsil, Toegye Taesil, and Seobaekdang Sansilcheong in order to enhance interesting and understanding on the traditional culture, improve the current issue of low birth rates contemporary society faces, and explore potential cultural transformations.
The sites where each Taesil is located present clearly Haengryong processes of Juryong, and are surrounded by the Sasinsa, which refines and protects Saenggi of Hyeolcheo around Hyeol. Furthermore, the waterways surrounding Hyeol achieve balance and harmony in accordance with the Yin-Yang method and have the optimal conditions of location and condition. In addition, Hyeol of each Taesil has Feng Shui characteristics. As analyzed from the perspective of Hyeongse, the features of Taesil are as follows.
First, Mongryongsil of Ojukheon forms Wahyeol by combining Mungok Suseongchae of Jusan Mamyeongsan and Tamlang Mokseongchae of Ansan. In the case of Jwa Cheongryong (Left Blue Dragon), Yongmaek from Hyeonmubong passes near Munseongsa and Ojuk(black bamboo) envelopes the Cheongryong. Suse (water system) is related to Toseongsu, and it conforms to the water principle of 『Jirisinbeop』(地理神法), corresponding to Geonjwasonhyang coming from Eul direction to a drainage at Sa. The Palyohwangcheonsal from Ohbang doesn’t need an extra Bibo because there is no Deuksu of water or sinkholes of mountain. The Palrosarohwangcheonsal from Eul and Byeong directions implemented Bibo by planting Yulgok pine tree and lagerstroemia indica tree respectively. The water shape is Waryonghamjuhyeong, which resembles a reclining dragon holding a bead in its mouth.
Jusan of Toegye Taesil is Yongdusan and Mungok Suseongchae, and Ansan is Mugok Geumseongchae, which symbolizes wealth and honor. As Jusan is Mungok Suseongchae, it forms Wahyeol. Jwacheongryong is extended along the left side of Jongtaek, and since Ubaekho (Right White Tiger) is relatively weak, it can be considered a deficiency. The waterway of Onhyecheon is Useonsu, corresponding to Toseongsu, and its orientation is Chukjwamihyang. As Ipsuryong is Gapryong with Oh Deuksu and Gon Pagu, it doesn’t align with 『Jirisinbeop』(地理神法). Since the Taesil is Jongtaek, surrounded on all four sides by a square-shape, it isn’t necessary to complement an extra Bibo for Hwangcheonsal. Its water shape is Pungchwinadaehyeong, which resembles a fluttering silk belt in the wind.
Finally, Jusan of Seobaekdang is Seolchangsan and it is Tamlang Mokseongchae, corresponding to the first type among nine compositions. As Ansan is also Tamlang Mokseongchae, its Hyeol is Yuhyeol. Its Hyeolcheo is protected by two ways of Yongmaek descending from Damisan as Jwacheongryong and Seolchangsan as Ubaekho. The waterway is Toseongsu, encircling Myeongdang like a belt, its orientation is Injwasinhyang, Ipsuryong is Inryong, Deuksu is Jin, and Pagu is Sa, so that it doesn’t conform to 『Jirisinbeop』(地理神法). A low wall is located in Hwangcheonsal to In direction, two-story Palrohwancheonsal is in Jeong and Gyeong directions, a straight-lined-shaped Haengnangchae is in Gyeong direction, and walls and trees are located in Jeong direction, so that they implement Bibo respectively. Watershape is Seonindokseohyeong, which resembles a Taoist hermit who is sitting calmly and reading a book.
Commonalities of each Taesil are as follows. First, they are located in Hyeolcheo and absorb Sanggi (Vital Energy). Feng Shui practices are implemented for expecting the birth of great individuals. Second, they are located in Gilji (auspicious sites), which possess Hyeongsae and Suse of Hapsu, including Baesanimsu, Jeonjeohugo, and Jeonchakhugwan. Third, they prefer Gilsu (auspicious water flow), and most of them conform to the Hapsu shape. Fourth, they consider Ipsuryong and Jwahyang with harmonious architectural arrangements with a natural environment. Fifth, each Taesil as a cultural heritage reflecting Confucian values and life-respecting ideology was constructed based on Feng Shui principles.
In addition, they exhibit distinct Mulhyeongron, such as Ojukheon is Waryonghamjuhyeong, Toegye Taesil is Pungchwinadaehyeong, and Seobaekdang is Seonindokseohyeong. It means that the space of Taesil exists not only for the celebration of birth but also for the symbol of a Joseon nobleman called Sadaebu spirit and perspective of life philosophy.
In conclusion, these Taesil correspond to Gilji of Feng Shui, and they are the result of complex cultural practices combining Confucian values of Joseon nobleman called Sadaebu and hopes for the prosperity of offsprings. By examining cultural significance and Feng Shui implications of traditional Taesil culture, this study suggests cultural reinterpretation and potential responses to the low-birth rate issues the contemporary society is facing. It not only reflects the traditional thought and practices of Joseon dynasty, in which life, space, and Confucian values were closely interwoven but also produces fundamental data for modernized interpretation possibility and cultural reevaluation on Feng Shui. In this society deepening the severe low-birth rate issue, this study expects to offer cultural alternatives or shift social perception, by reconsidering traditional perspectives of life philosophy and space.
