This study aims to analyze the geomantic (feng shui) characteristics of seven shrines dedicated to Admiral Yi Sun-sin (1545-1598) based on the theories of feng shui through on-site visits. The cases for analysis are Chungmusa in Suncheon, Chungmusa in Wando, Jeseungdang in Hansando, Chungryelsa in Tongyeong, Chungminsa in Yeosu, Hyunchungsa in Asan, and Chakryangmyo in Tongyeong. Furthermore, the study examines how these shrines have been maintained and protected through difficult historical challenges, ensuring the continued reverence for Admiral Yi Sun-sin.
Admiral Yi, who is highly regarded not only as the hero who saved Joseon but also as a figure who fought for peace in East Asia, is recognized as a brilliant general who “secured victory before engaging in battle”(勝兵先勝而後求戰), despite the dire circumstances of lacking naval forces, warships, and food supplies. The fervent admiration for Admiral Yi, who saved the nation during crises akin to “stacked eggs”, led to the establishment of shrines and portrait halls that embodied the collective wishes of the people for national peace and stability The construction of these shrines and portrait halls is believed to have been planned meticulously by scholars well-versed in Feng Shui principles.
The research employs a dual approach, integrating Form School (形氣風水) and Compass School (理氣風水) feng shui theories. Those used from Form School are the methods of Reading Mountain Range (看龍法), Finding Meridian Spot (定穴法), Embracing Wind (藏風法), Getting Good Waterway (得水法), and Mountain Shape (物形論). Sitting Direction and Facing Direction (坐向法) is utilized from Compass School. Additionally, the origin and theory of Turtle feng shui observed at three shrines including Chungmusa in Suncheon, Chungmusa in Wando, Jeseungdang in Hansando. The three shrines have the common features in the location and land form which are a turtle-headed shape as one of ten symbols of longevity and the narrow part in the end of mountain range Their land forms are classified as the type of Gold Turtle Entering the Sea (金龜入海形) or the type of Gold Turtle Buried in the Mud (金龜沒泥形).
When examining the sitting and facing directions, field investigations identified Chungmusa in Suncheon and Hyunchungsa in Asan are“Sitting in the Zi (North) direction and facing the Wu (South) direction”(子坐午向). Chungmusa in Wando is “Sitting in the Shen (West-Southwest) direction and facing the Yin (East-Northeast) direction”(申坐寅向). Jeseungdang in Hansando is “Sitting in the Geng (West-Southwest) direction and facing the Jia (East-Northeast) direction”(庚坐甲向). Chungryelsa in Tongyeong and Chungminsa in Yeosu are“Sitting in the Gui (North-Northeast) direction and facing the Ding (South-Southwest) direction”(癸坐丁向). Chakryangmyo in Tongyeong is “Sitting in the Hai (North-Northwest) direction and facing the Si (South-Southeast) direction”(亥坐巳向).
Unlike extensive research on feng shui related to Confucian academies (Seowon and Hyanggyo), royal tombs, and ancestral halls, this study is unique in focusing on the feng shui of shrines honoring Admiral Yi Sun-sin. By analyzing historical location strategies and site configurations, the research provides valuable insights into the cultural and geomantic significance of shrine Feng Shui
This study also documents the history, background, and preservation processes of shrines, portrait halls, and artifacts honoring Admiral Yi, emphasizing the meticulous planning of their locations and configurations based on feng shui theories.
