This study analyzes the characteristics of Feng Shui reflected in the site selection and spatial composition of Hyanggyo (鄕校) and Seowon (書院), educational institutions of the Joseon Dynasty. Focusing on site of four Hyanggyos in Incheon, including Gyodong Hyanggyo (喬桐鄕校), and the Ganghwa Chungnyeolsa Seowon (江華 忠烈祠), this research examines traditional educational complexes that combine ritual (祭禮) with instruction (敎育), in terms of Feng Shui
This study began with the researcher’s concern in and geographical connection to Incheon and employs both field surveys and literature reviews. Sources include the Journal of Cultural Heritage Studies (文化遺産硏究誌) and regional geographic texts (地誌文獻), providing a comprehensive foundation for exploring the Feng Shui principles reflected in those institutions. The cases analyzed in this study are four Hyanggyo (鄕校) sites in Incheon and Chungnyeolsa in Ganghwa.
This research applied both Form-based Fengshui (形氣風水) and Principle-based Fengshui (理氣風水: Compass Shool). It employs key traditional techniques including Kanryong-beop (看龍法), Jeonghyeol-beop (定穴法), Jangpung-beop (藏風法), and Deuksu-beop (得水法). In parallel, principles of Liqi Fengshui(理氣風水: Compass School) were applied using Jiri Ogyeol Palshippal Hyangbeop (地理五決 八十八向法) and Yangtaek Samyo (陽宅三要) to interpret auspiciousness based on building orientation (坐向) and compass direction.
The findings provide insight into the spatial logic found in traditional Confucian educational institutions and offer implications for integrating principles of Feng Shui into modern educational space planning. This study investigates the Feng Shui (風水地理的) characteristics of Hyanggyo (鄕校) in Incheon, aiming to establish a theoretical foundation for regional cultural heritage as a driving force of Incheon’s development as a cultural city. The research explores whether these Confucian educational spaces—serving both ritual (祭禮) and instructional (敎育) functions—correspond to the concept of Yangtaek (陽宅) in Fengshui theory. It further analyzes the suitability of each site as an auspicious location (gilji, 吉地), the application of Feng Shui principles in spatial layout, and the Bibo (裨補: Complementary function) to complement the weak points in Feng Shui.
In addition, by comparing cases of Incheon with other ones, this study identifies geographic specificities of Incheon's Hyanggyo and Seowon, and explores correlations between Feng Shui of educational institutes and how many students passed the national exam to be governmental officials.
These findings contribute to understanding Feng Shui and its application to contemporary cultural and educational planning. Findings reveal that all the five institutes analyzed have stable energy inflow (入首) from the Main Mountain (主山) into core ritual spaces such as the Daeseongjeon (大成殿) or shrine (祠堂).
However, the spatial formation of the Four Guardian Hills (四神砂) is generally insufficient, necessitating tree planting (樹木) for protective functions. Most sites also shows Good Water Configurations (得水局) and clear distinctions of auspiciousness and inauspiciousness depending on the direction of each building.
Spatially, while the compass direction of 5 cases are not same, the layout commonly shows the Confucian "Jeonhak-Humyo" (前學後廟) structure (low in front, high in back) except for Ganghwa Hyanggyo, which shows a unique "Jwahak-Umyo" (左學右廟) structure.
The results of study confirm that the selection of site for Joseon-era educational institutions incorporated Confucian and Feng Shui ideals. Moreover, the placement of vegetation functioned not only as landscape but also as symbolic and energetic enhancers, suggesting implications for contemporary educational design in terms of psychological comfort and spatial functionality. This study further positions Hyanggyo and Seowon as culturally valuable spaces for local identity, youth education, and community-based cultural programs. Hyanggyo (鄕校) and Seowon (書院) during the Joseon Dynasty functioned as educational institutions that nurtured talents of young people and performed ancestral rites (祭享) in accordance with Confucian state ideology. The selection of their sites and spatial composition reflected Confucian principles and Fengshui (風水地理) thought. This study analyzes cases in the Incheon region to confirm that Feng Shui served as a major criterion for site selection for educational institutions in traditional society, offering meaningful implications for the planning and design of modern educational facilities. In particular, the trees (樹木) planted around Hyanggyo and Seowon performed bibō (裨補) functions— showing sacredness, compensating for topographical deficiencies, and stabilizing vital energy (氣運). These elements demonstrate the potential application of traditional landscape principles to modern educational spaces, promoting psychological stability of students.
Furthermore, Hyanggyo and Seowon are not merely historical relics but hold potential as hubs for local cultural revitalization, cultivation of young people’s mind , and participatory cultural experiences. When integrated into contemporary basic education, they can serve as valuable resources for both cultural preservation and historical learning. However, this study is limited to cases within the Incheon region, which poses limitations in generalizing the findings nationwide. Future research should therefore include more diverse regions through comprehensive comparative studies, along with systematic data accumulation.
