미국 역대 대통령들의 사주에 대한 명리학적 연구 : FDR부터 Trump까지를 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 사주명리학을 숙명론의 틀에서 벗어나, 개인이 부여받은 고유한 특성과 잠재된 가능성을 바탕으로 삶의 방향을 주체적으로 설정해 나가는 데 유용한 ‘인생의 지침서’ 혹은 ‘삶의 나침반’으로 재해석하고자 한다. 또한 인간의 자유의지와 그에 따른 주체적 선택도 환경과의 상호작용 속에서 한 사람의 생에 큰 영향을 미친다는 것을 강조한다. 사주와 그 사주의 주인 간에 상호작용성이 있으며, 사주는 이러한 인생 여정에서 개인이 참조할 수 있는 유용한 내비게이션과 같은 역할을 수행할 수 있다.
이상과 같은 전제에 근거해 본 연구는 사주명리학의 다양한 이론 체계, 특히 개인의 선천적 기질과 사회적 환경의 바탕을 이루며 각기 독특한 계절적 의미를 함축하는 월지(月支)의 명(命)을 중심으로, 미국 역대 대통령들의 삶의 궤적과 그들의 주요한 정책 결정들이 어떠한 방식으로 상호작용을 하며 전개되었는가를 심층적으로 분석하고자 한다. 4계절의 기본적 성격을 집약하면, 봄은 시작과 태어남 (生)을, 여름은 성장과 확산(長)을, 가을은 성숙과 거둠(收)을, 겨울은 응축과 저장(藏)을 대표한다. 본 연구는 그 계절적 특성이 성공한 개인의 삶과 리더십에 매칭하고 부합하는지 분석하기 위해 15명의 미국 대통령의 사례를 선정하여 연구하고자 한다. 사주에 나타난 기질적 특성이 대통령의 리더십 스타일, 주요 정책 결정 과정, 대통령과 관련된 주요 사건들에 어떠한 방식으로 투영되었는지를 구체적으로 규명할 것이다.
본 연구는 미국 대통령이라는 특수한 집단을 연구 대상으로 하여 그들이 각자의 방식으로 ‘시간의 명령’을 이해하고 그에 부응하는 삶을 살았기에 최고 지도자의 위치에 오를 수 있었다는 관점을 갖는다. 대통령의 자리에 오른 이후, 그들은 막대한 권한을 바탕으로 시간의 흐름, 즉 대운(大運)과 세운(歲運)이 제시하는 명령을 따르거나 거스를 수 있다. 본 연구의 분석에 따르면, 레이건, 오바마, 클린턴, 아이젠하워, 루스벨트 대통령 등은 중요한 국면에서 시간의 명령에 비교적 순응하며 긍정적인 결과를 이끌어냈다고 분석한다. 그러나 트루먼, 포드, 존슨, 카터, 닉슨 대통령 등은 때때로 이러한 시간의 명령과 부조화되는 선택을 함으로써 기대에 못 미치는 성과(Performance)를 보이거나 당대에 부정적인 평가를 받기도 했다. 전자의 경우는 타고난 사주가 좋아서 성공적인 삶을 영위한 것이 아니다. 그들은 사주가 제시하는 고유한 특성을 이해하듯 자신을 잘 파악하였고, 변화하는 대운의 시간이 부여한 소명(召命)을 알아차리고 그 시간에 맞는 노력을 기울였다. 그렇기에 이들이 역사적으로 의미 있고 성공적인 발자취를 남길 수 있었다. 본 연구는 이러한 관점으로 이들의 사례를 분석하고자 한다.
봄에 태어난 대통령은 봄 계절의 특징과 마찬가지로 새롭게 시작하는 힘이 강하다. 이는 강한 추진력으로 밀고 나가, 과거와 다른 세상을 여는 것을 목적으로 한다. 실패한다고 해도 그로 발생한 새로운 정보가 유입되기에 지침을 세울 수 있는 의미 있는 가치가 된다. 그래서 정책적으로는 새로운 패러다임을 만들어 적용하고자 하며 다양한 시도와 경험을 도모한다. 때로는 이러한 시도들이 지나치게 방만해져 추스르지 못하는 일도 있으며 지나친 역동성과 성급함으로 인하여 시행착오와 실수를 보이기도 한다. 멀리 보지 못하고 저돌적으로 앞으로 나가려는 경향성이 강하므로 때로는 제어하는 브레이크가 필요할 때도 있다. 인묘진(寅卯辰), 봄에 태어난 사람은 대체로 어린이처럼 순수한 성정을 가지며 자기중심적이고 낙천적이며 쾌활하다. 봄의 계절에 태어난 대통령을 대표하는 사람은 레이건이다.
여름 생은 변화와 성과를 만들어내야 하는 소명이 있다. 그래서 그들은 본인의 잠재적 역량과 에너지를 최고도로 끌어 올려 자신의 존재가 최고임을 드러내고자 한다. 이를 위해 모든 역량과 수단을 동원하고, 정상에 도달하기까지 멈춤이 없으며 어떤 희생을 감수하고서라도 하고자 하는 바를 이루고자 한다. 이는 힘과 능력을 갖추어 의지대로 확장하는 특징으로, 주위의 간섭이나 제어에도 굴하지 않고, 자신이 하고자 하는 바를 추진한다. 투명하고 공개적인 일 처리를 좋아하며 업무에 열정적이다. 여름 생을 대표하는 미국 대통령은 트루먼, 케네디, 포드, H. W. 부시, G.W. 부시, 오바마, 트럼프이다.
가을 생은 열매를 맺는 계절에 태어나 생산물에 대한 평가와 마무리를 중요시한다. 계획적이고 합리적인 배분과 평가에 따른 계급 체계가 필요한 시기다. 그래서 가을은 예민한 시기이고 차등에 대한 결론이 나오는 때이기도 하다. 논쟁이 있더라도 결론을 수용하는 경향이 크다. 결과물에 대하여 가져갈 것과 버릴 것을 구분하는 능력이 있다. 사물과 사건을 판단하는 데 기준을 제시하며 분별력을 갖는다. 옳고 그름에 관한 판단도 정확하여 주변의 신망을 많이 받는다. 가을 생을 대표하는 미국 대통령은 아이젠하워, 존슨, 카터, 클린턴이다.
겨울 생은 생산 활동이 멈추는 계절에 태어났으므로 정리된 환경을 갖추고, 휴식을 통한 충전과 재생을 도모한다. 이는 정신적 사색과 깨달음, 희망과 비전으로 더 나은 이상적인 미래를 설계하는 힘을 갖는다. 겨울 생은 신중하고 내면적 성장을 중요시한다. 겨울의 동면과 에너지 축적은 봄에 사용하기 위한 것이다. 수축을 통해 자기를 보존하고 기를 응축시킨다. 꿈을 꾸며 희망을 품고 어려운 시기를 견디고자 한다. 주위의 인간관계에서도 응집성을 발휘하고 피아(彼我)를 잘 구분하여 자기와 함께 할 수 있는 사람들을 곁에 두고자 한다. 어둠 속에 있어도 많은 것을 상상하고 계획하며 어떻게 실현할 것인가를 고민하고 생각이 깊고 통찰력이 좋다. 겨울 생을 대표하는 대통령은 루스벨트, 닉슨, 바이든이다.
본 논문은 인간의 자유의지와 선택을 배제한 ‘운명 결정론’의 사주명리학에서 벗어나, 시간에 따른 자신의 소명을 알고, 변화하는 대운과의 조화를 이루고자 하는 개인의 노력이 삶의 길흉을 변화시킬 수 있다. 이는 사주명리학을 ‘삶의 지침서’로 새롭게 조명함으로써, 현대 사회에 필요한 실용적 학문으로 그 역량이 있음을 확보하는 데 이바지하고자 한다. 기존의 결정론적 관점은 자칫 명리학을 현실과 유리된 신비주의나 소극적인 심리적 위안의 도구로 전락시킬 수 있는 위험성을 내포하고 있다. 이는 주체적으로 자기 삶을 개척해 나가고자 하는 현대인의 삶의 태도와는 부합하지 않는다.
본 연구에서 제시한 관점의 전환은 명리학이 개인의 잠재력 개발과 능동적인 미래 설계를 위한 도구로 사주를 ‘지침서’, ‘나침반’, ‘내비게이션’과 같은 능동적 도구로 재해석함으로써 활용될 수 있는 중요한 이론적 토대를 마련한다. 이러한 재해석은 명리학을 수동적인 운명 수용의 틀에서 벗어나, 개인이 자기 삶을 주체적으로 만들어가는 활용 도구로 그 위상을 격상시키는 것이다. 이러한 접근은 명리학이 현대 사회의 합리적 사고와 주체성을 중시하는 시대적 가치관과 조응하며 그 학문적 정당성과 실용적 효용성을 동시에 확보하는 데 핵심적으로 기여할 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper reinterpreted Bazi as a useful “guidebook for life” or “compass for life,” moving beyond the framework of fatalism, based on an individual’s unique inherent characteristics and latent possibilities, for proactively setting the direction of their life. It also emphasizes that human free will and the autonomous choices made accordingly significantly influence one’s life through interaction with the environment.
There is an interactivity between Bazi and its master, and Bazi can serve as a useful navigation that individuals can refer to on their life. Based on these premises, this study deeply analyzed how the life trajectories of past US presidents and their major policy decisions interacted and unfolded, focusing on the diverse theoretical systems of Mingliology, especially the Myeong (命: Order)of the Wolji (月支: Monthly Branch), which forms the basis of individual innate disposition and social environment and implies unique seasonal meanings. Each season’s basic meaning is as follow: spring represents beginning and birth (生), summer growth and expansion (長), autumn maturity and harvest (收), and winter condensation and storage (藏). To analyze whether these seasonal characteristics matched and corresponded to each president’s lives and leadership, 15 cases were selected. The study aimed to specifically clarify how the temperamental characteristics expressed in Bazi were projected onto the presidents’ leadership.styles, major policy-making processes, and significant events related to the presidents.
This study takes the perspective that US presidents, as a special group, were able to reach the position of supreme leader because they understood and responded to “the command of time” in their own ways. After ascending to the presidency, they could follow or defy the commands presented by the flow of time, namely Daeun (大運: Luck Pillar)and Saeun (歲運: Year Pillar), based on their immense authority. According to this study’s analysis, presidents such as Reagan, Obama, Clinton, Eisenhower, and Roosevelt relatively conformed to the command of time during crucial junctures, leading to positive outcomes. However, presidents such as Truman, Ford, Johnson, Carter, and Nixon sometimes made choices that were out of sync with these commands of time, resulting in less than expected performance and negative evaluations at the time. In the former cases, it was not that their Bazi was inherently good, leading to a successful life, but rather that they understood their unique characteristics presented by Bazi, comprehended themselves well, and exerted efforts consistent with the given direction of their lives, thus leaving historically significant footprints.
Presidents born in spring(寅卯辰, Inmyojin), similar to the characteristics of the spring season, have a strong power to start anew, are creative, and possess breakthrough and driving force. In terms of policy, they seek to create and apply new paradigms, and undertake various attempts and experiences. Sometimes these attempts can become excessively scattered and difficult to manage, and excessive dynamism and haste can lead to trial and error and mistakes. They have a strong tendency to charge forward without looking far ahead, sometimes necessitating a controlling brake. People born in spring generally have a pure nature like children, are self-centered, optimistic, and cheerful. Reagan represents presidents born in the spring season.
Those born in summer are highly active and create major transformations. Their latent potential and energy are expressed to the highest degree, and they mobilize all their capabilities and means to become the best. They do not stop.until they reach the top, and they seek to achieve their goals, no matter what sacrifices they must make. They are characterized by expansiveness and push forward their intentions despite external interference or control. They prefer transparent and open work processes and are passionate about their duties. The US presidents who represent summer births are Truman, Kennedy, Ford, H.W. Bush, G.W. Bush, Obama, and Trump.
Autumn is the season of fruition, emphasizing productivity and completion. It is a time that requires planned and rational allocation and decision-making. Autumn is also a sensitive period and when conclusions regarding differentiation emerge. There is a strong tendency to accept conclusions, even if there are debates. They have the ability to distinguish what to keep.and what to discard regarding results. They provide criteria for judging objects and events and possess discernment. Their judgment of right and wrong is accurate, earning them much trust from those around them. The US presidents who represent autumn births are Eisenhower, Johnson, Carter, and Clinton.
Those born in winter are not free in their activities, making it a period for mental contemplation and recharging energy. Those born in winter are cautious and prioritize internal growth. The hibernation and energy storage of winter are for use in spring. They preserve themselves and condense their energy through contraction. They dream, hold hope, and seek to endure difficult times. In human relationships, they also show cohesiveness, accurately distinguish between “us” and “them,” and seek to keep.those who can be with them close. Even in darkness, they imagine and plan much, deliberate on how to realize their thoughts, are deep.thinkers, and possess good insight. The presidents who represent winter births are Roosevelt, Nixon, and Biden.
This paper’s re-illumination of Bazi as a “guidebook for life” that emphasizes individual’s proactive choices and efforts, breaking free from the shackles of fatalism, aims to ensure that Mingliology secures continuous academic competence and practical value in modern society. The existing deterministic perspective carries the risk of degrading Mingliology into mysticism detached from reality or a tool for passive psychological comfort. This does not align with the attitude of modern people who wish to proactively carve out their own lives.
The shift in perspective presented in this study provides an important theoretical foundation for Mingliology to be utilized as a tool for individual potential development and proactive future planning, by reinterpreting Bazi as an active tool like a “guidebook,” “compass,” or “navigation system.” This reinterpretation elevates the status of Mingliology from a passive acceptance of destiny to a practical tool for individuals to proactively create their own lives. This approach can critically contribute to Mingliology aligning with the contemporary values of rational thinking and subjectivism in modern society, thereby securing both its academic legitimacy and practical utility.
