This study reexamines Korean literary criticism from the 1950s to the 1960s through the lens of the concept of "performativity." Following the historical upheavals of liberation and war, literary criticism during this period went beyond the simple interpretation and evaluation of literary works to function as a strategic act of speech that proved the norms of the literary field and the qualifications of the subjects of criticism. In particular, during the formation of critical discourse in the 1950s and 1960s, the value of "modernity" was assigned to critics as a national and ethical task, and they repeatedly invoked 'modernity' to establish themselves as "modern" critical subjects.
The research analyzes the structure of such critical discourse on three levels: language, subject, and discourse. First, at the level of language, it analyzes the acceptance of new criticism, the self-censorship of the bilingual generation, and the strategies for clarity and justification in critical language. The assertion of literary autonomy, the repetition of conceptual terms, and the construction of an analytical style were part of the critic's practice of proving himself as "one who can speak about Korean literature." Second, at the level of "subject," this study examines how critics justified their discourses and constructed their critical status through their relationships with creators, the era, and the literary establishment. In this process, critics act not as mere interpreters of literature but as practical subjects who reorganize the order of the literary field through language. Third, at the level of "discourse," this study analyzes how critical discourse negotiates with contemporary social norms, institutional approval, and discourse structures to internalize "modernity" and confirm the effects of critical language through its repeatability and institutionalization. As a theoretical analysis framework, this study adopted Austin's theory of indirect speech acts, Derrida's concepts of repetition and delay, Foucault's discourse formation theory, Butler's concept of performativity, and Bourdieu's theory of literary field, which were modified as research methods. Moreover, TF-IDF-based keyword and social network analysis were employed as research methods of digital humanities. Moreover, TF-IDF-based keyword analysis and social network analysis were employed as digital humanities methodologies. This framework monitored the structural network of the critic-writer-magazine interrelationship and the quantitative changes in discourse over time from the 1950s to the 1960s.
Chapter III analyzes the "modernity" that the <Hubangi> coterie and <the Korean Association of Modern Literary Critics> sought to achieve through criticism. The <Hubangi> coterie dismantled the emotionally focused traditional poetic language and the ornamental nature of literary language, redefining language as a sculptural material that overarches sensation and thought, and restructuring the poet as an ethical agent. The criticism from the members of <the Korean Association of Modern Literary Critics>, focused on Yi-Sang's theories, exceeding simple commentary on writers, and was performed as a self-reflective practice that comprised the existence of critics and ethics of interpretation. Furthermore, an analysis of the titles and author information of articles published in 『Sasanggye』 and 『Hyndae Munhak』, representative magazines of the 1950s and 1960s, revealed that 『Sasanggye』, a general-topic-based magazine, consisted of diagnostic discourses mainly dealing with "economy," "society," and "policy." In contrast, literary magazines employed indirect speech acts strategies such as "literary history," "research," and "studies," therefore, conducting different institutional practices.
In Chapter IV, the research investigates how the institutional status of criticism was established within academia through the debate between Song Wook and Kim Jong-gil on the New Criticism introduced by Paek Chol. This study aims to clarify the process by which critics' critiques interact with one another. In addition, by analyzing reader submissions and editors in 『Sasanggye』, the study seeks to clarify how critical language extends into the popular dimensions and intervenes in the formation of public norms within the literary field. This structure of mutual indirect speech acts reveals that criticism is not an exclusive practice of experts, but a performative practice for sharing ethical judgments and a sense of the times. Through Sasanggye's reader column, it was intended to disclose that the reader column functioned not only as a channel for reader communication but also as a performative space where various acts of expression, such as emotional expression, literary judgment, and critical requests, were concentrated. The findings show that criticism is not an exclusive act of experts, but a performative practice that shares ethical judgment and a sense of the times, indicating that the literary field functioned as a public forum for horizontal communication.
In conclusion, the process of creating Korean literary criticism in the 1950s and 1960s was repetitive, reflecting an obsessive response to and justification of the contemporary demand for "modernity," which mirrored the structural characteristics of language and the practical process of subject formation. This study empirically explains that Korean literary criticism is a performative practice that transcends the boundaries between the production of norms, the formation of authority, and the institutionalization and popularization of the literary field. It aims to reestablish the historical function and find the significance of criticism in the 1950s and 1960s.
