The study of fortune-telling is based on the principle of neutralization, which seeks to avoid misfortune and seek good fortune, under the condition that the four seasons and the twelve months of the heavenly stems(天干) and the earthly branches(地支) constitute the conditions of human existence. The Yin-Yang and Wu-Xing(陰陽五行) that constitute fortune-telling are the most important natural principles in the principle of creation, restraint, and harmony. This study is on the combination of the heavenly stems(天干配合) by month in the 『Qiong-Tong-Bao-Jian(窮通寶鑑)
『Qiong-Tong-Bao-Jian maintains a monthly cycle-based description system, and there are two monthly cycle-based description systems. The first is one that is described by season, and the second is one that is described by month. Those described by season are in the form of ‘time-based system of events(以時系事) such as 『Guan-Zi(管子) and 『Chun-Qiu-Fan-Lou(春秋繁露), and those described by month are in the form of ‘monthly system of events(以月系事)’ such as Huai-Nan-Zi(淮南子), Lu-Shi-Chun-Qiu(呂氏春秋), and Li-Ji(禮記)·Yue-Ling(月令), which describe a year divided into 12 months.
The structure of 『Qiong-Tong-Bao-Jian is composed of a general theory for each of Wu-Xing(五行), and the structure is developed into detailed theories based on the ten stems(十干) for each of the twelve months. It is described in the same way in 「explain Mu(論木)」, 「explain Huo(論火)」, 「explain Tu(論土)」, 「explain Jin(論金)」, and 「explain Shui(論水)」. In addition, 『Qiong-Tong-Bao-Jian adheres to the principle of mutual generation and mutual inhibition from the perspective of Wu-Xing(五行) theory and applies it to the seasons, and it can be seen that it has a perspective of monthly order theory that applies it to the stages of each of the twelve months. However, 『Qiong-Tong-Bao-Jian is not only about the theory of the early and late seasons, but also focuses on the combination of the heavenly stems(天干配合) of the pre-use and the post-use by applying the ten stems(十干) to the monthly period from the perspective of the ‘natural ecology’. The combination of the heavenly stems(天干配合) centered on the monthly period is the combination of the Pre-Use(先用) and the Post-Use(後用).
Then, how does the 『Qiong-Tong-Bao-Jian view the combination of the heavenly stems? The combination is ultimately the most ideal combination in which each heavenly stem meets each month. First, an ideally composed and suitable combination refers to good use and bad use, and second, an unsuitable combination that is not ideally composed refers to a failure of good and bad results. The framework for viewing these ideal and unideal combinations is expressed as the mutual generation and mutual inhibition of The Yin-Yang and Wu-Xing(陰陽五行). In order to understand the mutual generation and mutual inhibition of The Yin-Yang and Wu-Xing(陰陽五行), the ten stem body images of each classic, Yuan-Hai-Zi-Ping(淵海子平)․San-Ming-Tong-Hui(三命通會)․Di-Tian-Sui-Chan-Wei(滴天髓闡微)․Wu-Xing-Da-Yi(五行大義) are presented.
What can be learned from the mutual generation and mutual inhibition principle of The Yin-Yang and Wu-Xing(陰陽五行) in the 『Qiong-Tong-Bao-Jian is the ‘innate talent’ that the person is born with. The ten stems are presented by month, and the characteristics are that the ranks of wealth and nobility are dealt with according to the principle of combination, with mutual generation and mutual inhibition according to the climate and season. The ‘heavenly stem combination(天干配合)’ centered on the month in the 『Qiong-Tong-Bao-Jian is structured as the Pre-Use(先用) and the Post-Use(後用). The combination of the Pre-Use(先用) and the Post-Use(後用) refers to the combination of Wu-Xing(五行) that are most necessary in the relationship between the daily and monthly periods, and Wu-Xing(五行) that help these necessary Wu-Xing(五行) work best. What is ultimately achieved through this is neutralization. Therefore, the combination of the Pre-Use(先用) and the Post-Use(後用) is the most important function in the process of achieving neutralization.
Ultimately, in order for humans to overcome the problem of good and bad fortune, human life aims for a state where the balance of Yin-Yang(陰陽) is in harmony, and the harmony of Wu-Xing(五行) is not biased to one side and does not have too much or too little. The perspective of ‘Pei-De-Zhong-He(配得中和)’ in the 『Qiong-Tong-Bao-Jian is to find balance and harmony in the given fateful requirements and the will to overcome them from the perspective of natural ecology, which is combination(配合) and neutralization(中和).
