“The Zhouyi Cantongqi (周易參同契)” is a text from the Later Han dynasty authored by Wei Boyang (魏伯陽, 100–170) that interweaves three major realms: the principles of Daoist philosophy as represented by Laozi and Zhuangzi, alchemical practices (known as internal alchemy) for achieving longevity, and concepts from the 「I Ching」 or 「Zhouyi」 (Book of Changes). Having been in existence for over 1,800 years, it is often regarded as the “King of Ancient Alchemical Texts” and has had a profound influence on Chinese culture and philosophy, maintaining an esteemed position within Daoism.
The title “Cantongqi” (參同契) suggests the integration or convergence (同) of three (參) disciplines, each regarded as complex and esoteric. By weaving these fields together, the text has traditionally been perceived as intricate and mysterious, leading even Chinese scholars to view it as an enigmatic and challenging work.
Despite its complexity, the「Zhouyi Cantongqi」 is highly regarded for its contributions to the fields of cosmology and Daoism. As Lu Xun (魯迅) noted, China is fundamentally a nation deeply rooted in Daoism. While Confucianism became the official philosophy endorsed by the ruling class after Dong Zhongshu (董仲舒) established Confucian orthodoxy during the Han dynasty, the popular ethos of the Chinese people has long been steeped in Daoist sentiment. Dong’s main work, 「Chunqiu Fanlu」 (春秋繁露), reflects this synthesis by discussing themes like the unity of heaven and humanity, the theories of yin-yang and the five elements, and the doctrine of cosmic anomalies, which are less aligned with the teachings of Confucius and Mencius.
The 「Zhouyi Cantongqi」 is considered one of Daoism’s most significant texts, ranking alongside the 「Tai Ping Jing」 (太平經), and it exerted substantial influence on Neo-Confucianism (新儒學) during the Song dynasty, as evidenced by Zhu Xi (朱熹) authoring a commentary on it. In Korea’s Joseon dynasty, where Neo-Confucianism dominated the intellectual sphere, 「Zhouyi Cantongqi」 continued to exert influence through Zhu Xi’s interpretations, impacting Korean scholarship across five centuries and extending its legacy even to modern times.
This cultural significance underpins the importance of studying the 「Cantongqi」 The philosopher Li Zehou (李澤厚) argued that the Han dynasty assimilated various philosophies, creating a cultural reservoir that continued to shape Chinese civilization from the Sui, Tang, Yuan, Ming, Qing dynasties to the present. Just as terms like “Han” (漢) became representative of the Chinese people and language, the Han dynasty’s reverence for the 「I Ching」 fostered its elevation as the supreme classic in both Confucianism and Daoism. The prevalent approach to the 「I Ching」 at the time was through xiangshu (象數學), a numerological and symbolic method, which the 「Cantongqi」 advanced and transmitted. While later eclipsed by yili studies (義理學), xiangshu thinking resurfaced in Neo-Confucianism, notably in the works of thinkers like Zhou Dunyi (周敦頤) and Zhu Xi, pivotal in forming Neo-Confucian cosmology.
In the Joseon Dynasty, the 「Zhouyi Cantongqi」 was rarely acknowledged as a legitimate Daoist text due to the dominance of Neo-Confucianism. Nevertheless, it circulated widely among Neo-Confucian scholars due to Zhu Xi’s association with it, even if acknowledging it openly risked severe penalties, including accusations of heresy. The text’s discreet yet profound insights reveal its universal values, transcending academic boundaries and earning recognition for its philosophical depth.
The 1441 print edition of 「Zhouyi Cantongqi」 is the oldest surviving copy, designated as Korea’s Treasure No. 1900. Printed with the “甲寅 type” (initially cast in 1434), it was completed under King Sejong’s mandate, with contributions from prominent scholars such as Gwon Geun (權近), Byeon Gye-ryang (卞季良), and inventor Jang Yeong-sil (蔣英實), as well as involvement from the future Grand Prince Suyang. Heo Gyun (許筠, 1569–1618) described the text as a prime manual for mental and spiritual cultivation and the highest Daoist doctrine. His novel 「The Tale of Hong Gildong」 further reflects the Daoist ideal of small, self-sufficient communities, showcasing a Daoist influence.
Specifically, the 「Cantongqi」 reformulates Han dynasty 「I Ching」 theories, such as the naji (納甲) system, guaqi (卦氣) theory, and yaozhen (爻辰) theory, introducing the concept of the monthly naji system (月體納甲說) as an innovation. In turn, the 「I Ching」 within the 「Cantongqi」 provides alchemical guidance, while the 「Cantongqi」 itself expands on the 「I Ching」, blending alchemical processes and enriching 「I Ching」 cosmology. Thus, understanding the 「Cantongqi」 necessarily involves engaging with its complex cosmological and alchemical theories.
By integrating cosmological perspectives within Daoism, the 「Cantongqi」 pioneered the unique field of Daoist 「I Ching」 studies As such, it occupies a prestigious place in Daoist history and cosmology. Examining the 「Cantongqi」 through the lens of 「I Ching」 thought clarifies the fundamental framework of Han dynasty cosmology and aids in comprehending its historical evolution.
