The purpose of this paper is to delve deeply into the essence and meaning of Metal (金) in Eastern metaphysics (Myeongrihak), compare traditional interpretations with modern perspectives, and study the role of Metal in social and cultural contexts. Building upon this, the paper aims to present practical methods for utilizing Metal within the framework of Myeongrihak.
Myeongrihak is a discipline based on the principles of Yin-Yang and the Five Elements (Wuxing), assigning specific symbols to the Heavenly Stems (Cheon-gan) and Earthly Branches (Ji-ji) derived from one’s date and time of birth to compose the Four Pillars of Destiny (Saju). This method has been widely utilized to assess the flow of life and fate.
This paper seeks to explain the forms of Metal in Myeongrihak and examine classical and object-based interpretations. In Eastern philosophy, Myeongrihak has evolved based on cosmological theories from the Pre-Qin period to the Song Dynasty. It is a field of study that seeks to observe nature to understand its principles and to study humanity to align individual capabilities and characteristics with the principles of the heavens. Astronomically, it helps individuals reflect on uncertain circumstances and derive behavioral principles from within, based on the movements of celestial bodies.
Myeongrihak relies on periodic analysis of the Yin-Yang symbols represented by the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches derived from one’s birth information. These Saju symbols, rooted in the periodicity of natural phenomena, are essential for understanding the cyclic order of nature paired with the philosophy of Yin and Yang.
For the Yin-Yang system to function, a logical and coherent thought system must underpin it. This report assumes that Myeongrihak is fundamentally based on the philosophy of Yin-Yang, which holds a central position in Eastern thought systems. A diachronic examination of its roots has been undertaken. Furthermore, the study explores Yin-Yang philosophy from spatial and temporal perspectives. By reviewing prior academic achievements and focusing on relatively under-researched areas of Myeongrihak, it investigates the formation of the field and its connections to ancient thought.
Texts such as Yuanhaiziping (淵海子平), Shitiansui (適天髓), and Sammyeongtonghoe (三命通會) describe Geng Metal (庚金) with attributes such as firmness, resilience, strength, and associations with materials like steel and silver. Meanwhile, Xin Metal (辛金) is likened to jewelry, mercury, vermilion, and pearls, representing softness and delicacy. These symbolic attributes are also reflected in interpretations of societal roles, where Metal is often linked to professions requiring strength or precision, such as law enforcement officers, military personnel, fashion designers, and medical professionals.
In the context of the Five Constants (Wuchang), Metal symbolizes Righteousness (Yi), emphasizing trustworthiness and principles in interpersonal relationships, as well as steadfastness and resolve. Modern society, characterized by technological advancement and complexity, can be seen as the era of Metal. However, this rapid evolution has led to a gradual erosion of the value of Yi. Therefore, it is essential to restore the proper energy of Metal and reaffirm the significance of Yi in today’s changing world.
By employing interpretative methods of Myeongrihak, this study analyzes and examines these relationships to deepen the understanding of the interconnectedness of Yin-Yang and the Five Elements. Ultimately, by exploring the fundamental nature of Metal, it seeks to contribute to a more fulfilling and meaningful life.
