The 60-character zodiac sign, consisting of the heavenly stems and earthly branches, forms the fundamental system of Myungri(Myeongli) and provides an important framework for understanding human destiny. The heavenly stems and earthly branches used in Myeongnihak symbolize the energies of heaven and earth, akin to the basic structure of the theory of heaven-human response. In Wang Chong(王充)'s thought, the idea that natural laws determine human fate is related to the Myeongnihak concept that the flow and energy of nature affect human life. This system of thought emphasizes the connection between humans and the universe, serving as a framework for understanding the world. Since ancient times in the East, the laws governing the movement of celestial bodies and the process of change in all things have been observed, their principles studied, and applied to human affairs. From this perspective, this paper provides an in-depth analysis of the Myeongri-logical use of Ganji(干支) based on ancient literature. The core theory within the theoretical systems of Myungri is the 'Ganji theory' of the 60-year cycle. Each zodiac sign, combining yin-yang and the five elements, profoundly reflects the Oriental view of cosmic nature and the principles of yin-yang and the five elements. In particular, the Chinese Zodiac acts as a space-time code representing natural changes, serving as a crucial framework that reflects the flow of time and spatial changes. Thus, the 60 zodiac signs, encompassing the ten heavenly stems and twelve earthly branches that signify natural changes, represent a comprehensive totality of energy that precisely captures the phenomena of all things in the universe. The motivation for studying this zodiac theory arose from the need to go beyond merely translating ancient literature on the ten heavenly stems and twelve earthly branches and to reinterpret the ten Chinese zodiac signs as recorded in literature. From this perspective, the study examined each of the ten heavenly stems and twelve earthly branches from the Myeongri perspective, as depicted in ancient texts such as the 『ShuowenJiezi(說文解字)』 and 『Wuxingdayi(五行大義)』, which best illustrate each zodiac sign as a natural phenomenon. Based on this, the theoretical foundation for the 22 characters of Cheongan(天干) and Jiji(地支) was developed by systematically analyzing the Myeongri-logical implications of each of the ten heavenly stems and twelve earthly branches, with an example of the application of Myeongri theory presented. Next, the study reviewed literature on Jijanggan(地藏干) and discussed the characteristics and principles of change inherent in each branch as a new concept. Particularly, by revealing that Jijanggan is a ‘blueprint of nature’ that captures the circulation of the four seasons as heaven’s time flows through the supporting space, the study aimed to present a new perspective for the application of Myeongri studies. In examining the transformation of the ten heavenly stems, the classical theory of heavenly harmony was reviewed, and the principles of this harmony, including the purposes and conditions necessary for seasonal changes, were applied using images from the Ksitigarbha and the main hexagram. The argument was made using new logic. In terms of Myeongri studies, there are countless theories and practical aspects derived from Cheonganhap. However, rather than determining which of the various logics is right or wrong, the significance lies in the ability to explore the diverse meanings implied in Cheonganhap from multiple perspectives.
In conclusion, this study, focusing on the core theory of the zodiac signs within Myeongri studies, returned to the original meanings of the ten Chinese zodiac signs, which encapsulate the laws of nature, and explored the implications of each character. By faithfully applying these results to existing Myeongri theory, the study aims to provide a foundation for future scholars to offer clearer explanations in an improved context.
