This thesis is part of the research on Yeongsanjae, which aims to study its establishment during the mid-Joseon Dynasty. There have been various theories about the inception of Yeongsanjae, including ideas that it was complied by Su Dongpo’s sister, devised by Daegakguksa Uicheon, developed from the Lotus Sutra Assembly, or evolved from one of the five Dharma assemblies of the mid-Joseon period. It is also suggested that additional rites, such as Sikdang-Jakbeop for monks and nuns were incorporated into Yeongsansae. Unlike Suryukjae, which has a clear background and compiler, the term Yeongsanjae only emerged in modern times.
In Chapter II, titled "The Establishment of Yeongsanjae," Yeongsanjae is defined as a ritual to collectively recite and offer the Lotus Sutra to accrue merit and pray for the deceased’s rebirth in paradise. Before the 17th century, Yeongsanjae was transmitted as a ‘Jakbeop-jeolcha’(1496) for opening five types of Dharma assemblies, including thd Lotus Sutra. After the mid-17th century, Yeongsan-Jakbeop, which involves reciting the Lotus Sutra, emerged. By the late 17th and early 18th centuries, the ritual procedure for inviting Shakyamuni Buddha of Vulture Peak appeared in texts like “Jebanmun or Geumsansa temple” and “Sanbobeumeumjip of Bohyeonsa temple.” This indicates that the completion of the Yeongsanjae form does not necessarily coincide with the appearance of the Lotus Sutra recitation assemblies. The completion of Yeongsanjae could be sain to have been achieved with the addition of rites for monks and nuns, like Sikdang-Jakbeop, to Yeongsan-Jakbeop.
Yeongsanjae can be considered to have existed in the ‘Jakbeop-Jeolcha’ form from the 15th century to the early 17th century, marking its nascent period. It then appeared as Yeongsan-Jakbeop in the "Ojongbeumeumjip" (1652/1661) in the mid-17th century, and the form similar to the present was established by the late 17th to early 18th century. Key ritual records from this period include "Jebanmun of Geumsansa temple(1694)," followed by "Beomeumsanbojip edited by Jihwan," and "Sanbobeumeumjip of Bohyeonsa temple," which are considered Uigwe of the establishment period of Yeongsanjae.
Chapter III, titled "Preparation of Yeongsanjae," discusses the initial ceremonies. The first ceremony is the welcoming ceremony for spirits, which targets specific benevolent spirits as described in "Jebanmun of Geumsansa temple." The burning ritual aims to eliminate karmic obstacles and cultivate good roots for the invited spirits. It involves evening and dawn burning rituals, chanting Dharani, and reciting the names of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas to dispel obstacles and cultivate virtuous roots.
The ritual of carrying the Dharma Lord involves inviting the Buddha of Vulture Peak, it was referred to as "the procedure for the Vulture Peak ritual" in "Jebanmun of Geumsansa temple" but it was referred to "carrying the Buddhist scroll painting" and "carrying the Dharma Lord." The final step is the purification to invite the Three Jewels, which involves inviting Avalokiteshvara, chanting Dharani, and sprinkling sweet dew water to purify the site and participants. The Invocation Verse was completed during the establishment period of Yeongsanjae.
Additional subsidiary rituals include the ritual procedure for protecting the site and the ceremony of dotting the eyes to consecrate the hall of hel.
Chapter IV, titled "Execution of Yeongsanjae," begins with the actual execution of the Vulture Peak ritual. The first ceremony is inviting Buddha, which can vary in scale from small to large. It starts with the act of reverence called "raising Buddha." Depending on the situation, the summoning ceremony or "inviting Buddha" may be conducted on a small scale (Dancheongbul) or a large scale (Daecheongbul). "Jebanmun of Geumsansa temple" presents a unique view of inviting Shakyamuni Buddha of Vulture Peak and recognizing the Three Jewels as Buddhas from Other Directions. The gāthā for offering a seat adopts the phrase "Creating the cause for oneself and others to achieve Buddhahood" from the traditional Suryukjae text. In the case of offering tea, the practice of performing "Hyanghwa Jeongnye(Offering of Incense and Flowers)" is followed.
The central part of Yeongsanjae is the Joint Recitation ceremony, during which the title of the scripture is explained and recited together. It begins with the Incense Ceremony, where incense is lit, and prayers are offered to the Three Halls and the participants. This is followed by Raising the Scripture, where an imaginary, wordless sutra is presented; if not, the benefits of the Lotus Sutra are explained, and the assembly recites the Lotus Sutra together, praying for the deceased.
The offering ceremony consists of three parts: Presenting the Offering, Transforming the Offering, and Offering Ceremony. In "Jebanmun of Geumsansa temple," the specific donor is mentioned as 'a certain donor' in the place known as 'the practitioner,' traditionally referred to as ‘Sincerely Offering Fragrance and Delicacies.’ The Transforming the Offering follows the format of the "Jungryemun" of Suryukjae, and the Offering Ceremony is performed with the Six Dharma Offerings and the Changing Offerings. It is noted that praise verses vere added to these ceremonies during the establishment period of Yeongsanjae, praise verses were added to these ceremonies. The Merit-transference ceremony is a ritual of dedicating all the accumulated merits from Yeongsanjae to all beings. This includes prayers for the Three Halls and blessings for the practitioners. Participants begin by vowing to 'Take Refuge in the Triratna(Three jewles) and the ceremony concludes with three rounds of Merit-transference.
Although not explicitly mentioned in the procedure for the Vulture Peak ritual during the establishment of Yeongsanjae in the mid-Joseon period, it can be inferred that current Yeongsanjae includes additional ceremonies. These include the offering ceremony to the Ten Kings of the Underworld, as well as offerings such as the invitation to offering ceremony and Avalokiteśvara banquet. The ceremony also includes a banquet for the lonely spirits of the deceased, which is then concluded with a send-off ceremony.
