This thesis explores the background, fundamental theories, and development process of the Gua-Qi Theory(卦氣說) during the Western Han Dynasty. The Han Dynasty was a important period in the history of Yi Studies(易學), with the Gua-Qi Theory being its most significant characteristic. The Gua-Qi Theory interprets not only natural phenomena but also the fortunes and misfortunes of human affairs by representing the Calendrical System(曆法)—including the four seasons, twelve months, twenty-four solar terms, and seventy-two Hou(候)—through the unique Gua(卦) and Yao(爻) system of the “Zhou Yi”(周易).
The Gua-Qi Theory(卦氣說) is intricately tied to the inception of the Han Dynasty. Han Gaozu(漢高祖) Liu Bang(劉邦), who deposed the Qin Dynasty in 202 B.C. and ascended to the throne, aimed to legitimize his rule while maintaining continuity with the Qin Dynasty's system. Establishing the new time and space suited to the new dynasty was imperative, leading to the relocation of the capital from Xian Yang(咸陽), the former Qin capital, to Chang An(長安). In 104 B.C., the Taichu Calendar(太初曆) was promulgated, marking a revision of the existing calendar to establish a novel temporal system. Thus, the Han Dynasty implemented and restructured norms and regulations tailored to the new time and space, endeavoring to establish a logical and foundational framework for the Western Han Dynasty.
There was a need for ideologies that justified the legitimacy of the Han Dynasty as the ruler of the empire and governed or stabilized it. These ideologies manifested in Tianming Theology(天命神學). Within Tianming theology, the reasoning of Yi Studies(易學) was revealed through the Gua-Qi Theory(卦氣說). Tianming(天命) is revealed through the Tiandao(天道), so it is sought to observe Tiandao in order to understand human affairs. Therefore, understanding Qi(氣), which manifests Tiandao, became a crucial issue in Han Dynasty thought. Despite Emperor Qin Shi Huang's book-burning(焚書), the “Zhou Yi”(周易) was preserved and passed down to the Han Dynasty. This led to the development of the Gua-Qi Theory by scholars such as Meng Xi(孟喜) and Jing Fang(京房), who applied Qi theory to the interpretation of “Yi”(易).
The main purpose of the Gua-Qi Theory(卦氣說) was to grasp Tiandao(天道) and structure it through the Gua(卦) and Yao(爻) images of the “Zhou Yi”(周易). They aimed to understand and structure Tiandao, considering Tiandao to be manifested by Qi(氣), and accordingly tried to comprehend the flow of Qi by expressing it through Gua and Yao images. Therefore, in the Han Dynasty's Gua-Qi Theory, the method of interpreting the “Yi”(易) was Qi theory(氣論), focusing on understanding the flow of Qi through the Gua. Originally, the Gua-Qi Theory was created to understand the flow of Qi, but it evolved into a system for predicting its patterns. The Gua-Qi Theory interprets natural phenomena as disasters or auspicious signs, so it has incorporated elements of divination to predict them in advance.
To understand the ideology and culture of the Han Dynasty, one must grasp the Yin-Yang(陰陽) theory and the Five Elements(五行) theory, which were based on the philosophical concept of Qi(氣) during that era. Additionally, understanding the Calendrical System(曆法) based on East Asian astronomy is essential. Knowledge of the “Zhou Yi”(周易), prominently studied during the Han Dynasty, is particularly crucial. This thesis explores the origins and development of the Gua-Qi Theory(卦氣說) during the Western Han Dynasty. It examines the emergence and evolution of Yi Studies(易學) and the Calendrical System. Furthermore, I conducted an in-depth analysis of how Yi Studies and the Calendrical System combined to develop into the Gua-Qi Theory.
Chapter 2 covers the Han Dynasty Yi Studies(易學) and Qi(氣) theory, which are fundamental theories of the Gua-Qi Theory(卦氣說). It explores the background of the birth of the “Book of Changes”(易經)—also known as the “Zhou Yi”(周易) recognized as the highest Confucian scripture—as a divination text, and the formation period of the “Book of Changes” and the theories related to the Yao(爻) composing the Gua(卦). The chapter examines how the concept of Qi, used by ancient Chinese to explain natural phenomena, evolved into the Yin-Yang Qi during the pre-Qin period. It analyzes the concept of Yi, correlating with the content of “Yi Wei · Qian Zao Du”(易緯·乾鑿度) and “Shuogua Zhuan”(說卦傳). Additionally, the chapter organizes the spatiotemporal framework and symbolism of the Eight Diagrams(八卦) presented in the “Shuogua Zhuan”, which have significantly influenced the Gua-Qi Theory.
Chapter 3 covers the development process of the Calendrical System(曆法), another fundamental theory of the Gua-Qi Theory(卦氣說). It examines the origins and development of Chinese astronomy, initially designed for agricultural purposes, and the completion process of the 24 Solar Terms. The chapter also explores how phenology, used to determine agricultural seasons in ancient societies lacking a developed Calendrical System, evolved into the 72 Hou(候). Additionally, it investigates the construction of the system of 12 lunar months based on the concepts of the Five Elements(五行) and Yin-Yang(陰陽). The chapter summarizes the application period and content of the Sexagenary Cycle Calendar System(干支紀法), which denotes the year, month, day, and hour using Heavenly Stems(天干) and Earthly Branches(地支). Furthermore, it organizes the background and key features of how the Taichu Calendar(太初曆), which introduced a new concept of time during the Han Dynasty, was subsequently revised to the Post-Han Shifun Calendar(後漢四分曆) and the Qianxiang Calendar(乾象曆) during the Later Han Dynasty.
Chapter 4 deeply analyzes the development process and key features of the Gua-Qi Theory(卦氣說) during the Western Han Dynasty, which integrates Yi Studies(易學) and Calendrical System(曆法). The study focuses on the Gua-Qi Theory of Meng Xi(孟喜), Jiao Yanshou(焦延壽), Jing Fang(京房), and the “Yi Wei”(易緯). Firstly, it examines the historical background that led to the birth of the Gua-Qi Theory in the Western Han Dynasty. It then delves into Meng Xi's original formulation of the Gua-Qi Theory, which combines Yi Studies and Calendrical System, analyzing its contents such as the 12-month Gua(卦), the 72 Hou(候), the Si Zheng Gua(四正卦), the 24 solar terms, the 60 hexagrams, and the concepts of 6 and 7/80 days. Additionally, the study explores the extensive content expanded by Jiao Yanshou in the “Jiaoshi Yilin”(焦氏易林), where he assigned 64 derived hexagrams to the 64 primary hexagrams, resulting in a collection of 4,096 divinations. Furthermore, the chapter compares and analyzes the differences between the Method of Assigning Hexagrams to Days(分卦直日法) used by “Jiaoshi Yilin” and Meng Xi.
Meng Xi's Gua-Qi Theory(卦氣說) was passed down to Jing Fang(京房) through Jiao Yanshou(焦延壽), evolving further into Jing Fang's own Gua-Qi Theory. I explored how Jing Fang's Method of Assigning Hexagrams to Days(分卦直日法) integrates the methods of Meng Xi and Jiao Yanshou. Jing Fang devised a new arrangement system for the 64 hexagrams known as the Eight Palace Gua Theory(八宮卦說) and associated the Sexagenary Cycle(干支) with the 64 hexagrams, referred to as the Na Jia and Na Zhi Theory(納甲納支說). This is based on the Qian-Kun Sheng Liuzi Theory(乾坤生六子說) found in the “Shuo Gua Zhuan”(說卦傳). Through this analysis, the Na Jia Theory(納甲說) aligns with the Five Elements characteristics of the Heavenly Stems(天干) according to the Sancai Theory(三才論). The Na Zhi Theory(納支說) clarifies the assignment of the 12 Earthly Branches(地支) into Yin(陰) and Yang(陽) branches based on the Qian-Kun Sheng Liuzi Theory and the principles of Yin-Yang changes in the 12-month Gua(卦). Additionally, I examined the contents and characteristics of the Shiying Theory(世應說), Feifu Theory(飛伏說), and the Gua-Qi Theory of Liuzi Gua(六子卦). I also analyzed deeply into the concepts of Jianyue(建月) and Jisuan(積算).
Finally, I examined how the Gua-Qi Theory(卦氣說) of the “Yi Wei”(易緯) evolved with the incorporation of Numerology(象數學) during the late Western Han Dynasty. I analyzed and organized new Gua-Qi Theories, such as the Si Zheng Gua Theory(四正卦說) which incorporates the Eight Winds(八風), the Eight Trigrams Gua-Qi Theory(八卦卦氣說), the Nine Palace Gua-Qi Theory(九宮卦氣說), and the Yao Chen Theory(爻辰說). Furthermore, I reviewed that the “Yi Wei · Jig Lan Tu”(易緯·稽覽圖) includes Meng Xi’s theory of the Six and Seven-Eightieth Days(六日七分說) and Jing Fang’s allocation of seventy-three out of eighty days to the Si Zheng Gua. Additionally, I presented multiple pieces of evidence indicating that the studies of Meng Xi and Jing Fang in Yi(易) were inevitably preceded, despite academic controversies surrounding the original relationship between their studies and the Gua-Qi Theory of the “Yi Wei”.
As previously discussed, during the Western Han Dynasty, Meng Xi(孟喜) established a system of Gua-Qi Theory(卦氣說) that integrated the principles of Yi Studies(易學), including Gua(卦) and Yao(爻) images, with Calendrical System(曆法), creating new rules suited to the new time and space. Moreover, Meng Xi's Gua-Qi Theory was transmitted through Jiao Yanshou(焦延壽), Jing Fang(京房), and the “Yi Wei”(易緯), which introduced and further developed methods such as the Na Jia Theory(納甲說), Theory of Calamities and Anomalies(災異說), and Numerology(象數學). Consequently, this theory firmly established itself as a cornerstone of the worldview during the Han Dynasty.
