The hexagram of returning (復卦), havng the shape in whichYang (陽) originated for the first time, corresponds to the wintersolstice (冬至) when the length of the day begins to get longer in the24 seasons of the year, and was understood to mean the origin ofheaven and earth in terms of cosmology. Additionally, in associationwith the virtue of An hui (顔回), Confucius's greatest disciple, thehexagram of returning (復卦) was accepted as having more importantmeaning than other hexagrams.- 146 -In this paper, the controversy was analyzed, which took place inEast Asia during the traditional era regarding the issues of ChengYi’s criticism related to the meaning of the Hexagram of returning(復), which was interpreted by Wang Bi (王弼). In this paper, ,focusing on the Wang Bi (王弼)-Cheng Yi (程頤) controversy, themeaning of the controversy was examined by analyzing how thecontroversy progressed in chronological order and spread spatially.Cheng Yi disparaged Wang Bi's annotation of Hexagram ofreturning, which contains Lao Zhuangzi's thought on naught (无),saying that it was a Tao-ignorant theory, and tried to interpret theHexagram of returning by delving into Confucian ethics. Cheng Yi’scriticism on the Wang Bi's annotation spread to criticisms on ShaoYong (邵雍) and Zhou Dunyi (周敦頤), the founders ofNeo-Confucianism in the Song Dynasty, and revised as a theory inwhich both of movement and stillness must be taken intoconsideration by Zhu Xi(朱熹), a Confucian scholar who compiledNeo-Confucianism.The Wang Bi-Cheng Yi debates over the Hexagram of returningwere also passed down to epidemiologists of the Joseon Dynasty. TheNeo-Confucianism of the Joseon Dynasty advocated Cheng Yi for hiscriticism on Wang Bi, and as to differences of opinion between WangBi and Cheng Yi, attempted to balance the differences of opinion- 147 -between the two scholars from the Zhuxi’s perspective. However,Confucianists in the traditional era tried to interpret the Hexagram ofreturning from the standpoint of rejecting heresy and defending thetradition of Neo-Confucianism. Accordingly, it can be said that thelimitations of not recognizing academic diversity and autonomy wererevealed
