In researching the Naeyeonsan Bogyeongsa Temple in terms of feng shui geography, the purpose of this study is to investigate whether the necessary conditions of Myeongdang are still met even after a long period of time. In particular, the focus was on finding out the principle of generation of the Juryong and investigating the evidence of Hyul, Hyuljeung and the position of Hyul, Hyulcheo. There were two reasons for this. First, the interpretation of Naeryong is so important that it is said to look at the Cheon-ri’s source when looking at the mountain, so there was an ambiguous problem that it was difficult to interpret as a general feng shui theory in the interpretation of Bogyeongsa's Naeryong. Second, in the story of the foundation of Bogyeongsa Temple, There is a record that says, "A large pond at the depth
of 100 Jas (Ja is a unit of the korean foot.) was filled and Geumdang(it is Juckgwangjeon Hall) was built on it and it was called Bogyeongsa Temple.", and if that is true, the place was not consistent with the position of Hyul, Hyulcheo as the feng shui’s theory." As a result, I came to question the true position of Hyul,
Hyulcheo and had to find out it. In general, temples build the most important Geumdang in the position of Hyul, Hyulcheo and arrange attached a number of annexes in the area. However, I think it is an irresponsible attitude as a feng shui scholar to simply interpret the present Daewungjeon Hall’s site as the position of Hyul, Hyulcheo. As a method of identifying these two questions, I reviewed the phenomenon based on the Giri-ogyul such as the theory of Ryong-se, the theory of Hyul-se, the theory of Sa-se, the theory of Su-se and the theory of Jwa-hyang, but I actively used the the Dowsing method as a means for parts that were difficult to
interpret theoretically. And then as an auxiliary means, I used as data such as ancient literatures, Youtube, some kinds of maps, on-the-spot investigation for a field, interviews with the officials of the Bogyungsa Temple, photos, reports, or literatures related to the Bogyeongsa temple. I seek to prove the facts by visualizing them in a scientific way as an engineering scholar before I am a feng shui student. Dowsing method is applied in a wide range of fields such as medical field, mineral field, construction field, and life field, and many scholars recognize it. Therefore, it can be applied naturally to the feng shui. Somebody might ask how to trust the results of interpretation by means that have not been recognized by the feng shui academic world despite the fact that there is definitely a unique theory of feng shui. However, rather than ignoring this method unconditionally, I believe that taking this method boldly and actively applying it is the key to advancing Korean feng shui
geography in the future. There are people who have already applied this method to feng shui to open a new horizon in the field of feng shui geography. However, applying this method to feng shui, there is a problem with the proficiency level of the dowsing rod operator. This problem will be solved if a person can be trained thoroughly by an expert with skilled technique of the dowsing. Since I am not an expert yet, I made it sure to visit the field and verify it with my professor in charge of the dowsing in order to secure the reliability of judgment in using this technique. 『The theory of Myeongsan』 says "When you look at the mountain, look at the source of Cheonri.", it means that the genealogy of Ryongmaek is important. Unlike the general case in which a single Ryongmaek condenses a Hyul and forms a Myeongdang, the Juryong of Bogyeongsa Temple is unique as the composite produced by two branches of Ryongmaek extending from Naeyunjimaek. This Juryong is the Guiryong that created Jinhyul and formed a wide Myeongdang as Saengryong and Jinryong that inherited the life of the magnificent, beautiful, and
ever-changing Naeyunjimaek. Bogyeongsa Temple is a place where Chungryong is stronger than Baekho. Yeongsanjeon Hall includes not only the founder of
Bogyeongsa Temple but also several ancient monks who devoted themselves to the Temple and worked hard on the practice and moralization and this seems to be telling it. If you look around the temple, the form of mountain seems as if a large bird sits on the nest, hangs its head, and wraps its big wings around the
nest, so you can feel the warmth when you enter the Bogyeongsa Temple. Hyeonmubong as Geumsung in the back brings wealth, and Ansan as Iljamunsung in the front also brings wealth and aprecious honor. In addition, Bogyeongsa Temple is located in a place where the mountain is deep and there are plenty of clear
water. 『The theory of Myeongsan』 says, "One stream of water flows out of one branch of mountains, and ten streams of water flow out of the ten branches of mountains." Clear water originating from numerous mountain branches such as Satgatbong Peak, Maebong Peak, Hyangrobong Peak, and Cheonryeongsan Mountain gathers and flows down along the Gwangcheon stream. It seems to stroke the Bogyeongsa temple releasing all of the condensed energy and protects the life of Myungdang. So even the form of water is excellent. In various old books, there is a saying, "the mountain governs people, and the water governs wealth." This means that a lot of people come to places with deep mountains and a lot of water, so it means that a lot of wealth comes in, which can be applied to Bogyeong
Temple. Hundreds of thousands of people visit Naeyeonsan Mountain every year and tens of thousands of people visit the temple, which in turn provides economic benefits to the temple and its neighboring residents making some of them wealthy. In addition, the Boryeongsa Temple is a temple built south-facing in Myeongdang, a Jinhyul site that meets the three requirements of Yangtaek, so when you enter the temple area, you can feel the full energy of life. Therefore, the Bogyeongsa Temple was built in a place of heavenly grace with a harmonious and lucky landscape of Jangpungguk and meets three requirements of Yangtaek. From these facts, it can be seen that the contents of the founding stories of Bogyeongsa Temple recorded in 『Bogyeong-Geumdang -Topgi』 and 『Okryongja-Sansu-Bigi』 are not futile. It also is considered that it was the source that Bogyeongsa Temple was able to continue its reputation in the long stream of time. Lastly, this study may have some differences in approach and different conclusions compared to the previous study by Yang Dong-ju, but I am confident that it has its own meaning and value. Nevertheless, if there are any incomplete parts or errors in this paper, I hope that the follow-up researcher will further supplement it and complete it
