This study examines the activities and processes through which intellectuals in the mid-Joseon period transitioned into Confucian physicians(‘儒醫’) and their engagement with shamanistic healing practices, focusing on Lee Moon-geon’s『Mukjae Diary』and his significant contributions in the Seongju region.
During the Joseon era, despite the presence of medical institutions and professional practitioners in both central and regional areas, there was a significant scarcity of practitioners compared to the number of patients. In response, the government implemented measures to enhance medical education, train practitioners, and disseminate medical literature to improve the healthcare environment. However, these efforts fell short of expectations. Moreover, medical conditions in regional areas were notably worse than in central regions, compelling scholar-intellectuals to inevitably engage in safeguarding their own and their families' health, as well as that of local residents.
Consequently, intellectuals who filled this void were referred to as “Yu Ui”, a term combining the characters for scholar (Yu) and practitioner (Ui). Yu Ui denoted individuals who, through the study of medicine and the mastery of medical techniques, practiced Confucian values and ideals.
Moreover, while the Joseon era legally prohibited shamanism, practical life saw a prevalent belief among the populace, including the royal family, aristocrats, and intellectuals, that invoking supernatural powers through shamanistic rituals, known as “Gud”, could cure illnesses considered incurable.
Therefore, intellectuals, while venerating the ideology of Neo-Confucianism, embraced, and utilized various practices encompassing medicine, Buddhism, Taoism, shamanism, and folk remedies to address illnesses. While engaging in Confucian physician activities, these scholar-officials neither wholly rejected nor wholly endorsed indiscriminate shamanistic practices. However, they comprehended and accommodated the circumstances of the Joseon era aiming to overcome the limitations of the era's rudimentary medical technology by addressing incurable diseases and epidemics through shamanistic healing practices.
Keywords: Disease, Confucian physicians, Shaman doctor, Shamanistic healing practices, Lee Moon-geon, Mukjae Diary.
