This study is a study of the life of William Lilly(1602–1681), a 17th-century English astrologer, and his book, "Christian Astrology". In other words, it is to examine which previous astrologers his astrology theory originated from, what the circumstances of the times were like, how the composition and arguments of his book "Christian Astrology" were made, and it is to examine how his astrology theory affected society at the time and what influence it had on later astrology.
First, based on William Lilly's posthumous autobiography, "William Lilly's History of His Life and Times", the astrologer's life was studied chronologically, and the political, social, and cultural environment of England at the time of his life was examined. Although he could read, write, and speak Latin fluently, he was born the son of a poor local farmer and studied himself as a secretary to the upper class, confirming that his upbringing later served as a determination to write the astrological theory "Christian Astrology" in English, a popular language rather than Latin. It was also confirmed that his study with more weight on Horary Astrology was not politically irrelevant to the parliamentarian's tendency to be friendly to the common people and the Puritan spirit to give charity to the needy.
Second, in this study, by analyzing the contents of the two preface and tribute of "Christian Astrology" and studying the composition of the contents in each volume, it was confirmed that his naming of "Christian" and his always calling himself "Student of Astrology" were due to his common sense and teacher spirit. Lilly's Astrology theory is based on the theories of many previous astrologists, including Ptolemy, Guido Bonatti, Magnus, Leovitius, Argolus, and Naboth. But it can be confirmed that it is a dialectical result of repeating transformation and establishment through one's own experience through Horoscope interpretation and counseling. Although the term "Almuten" is used as it is or in combination, the calculation method was modified by Lilly himself and established as his theory, and although the Hyleg theory is explained in detail, it adopts only Hylegicall Places, which can eventually become Hyleg, and shows a transformation and establishment phenomenon that is used as a standard for significator. However, when there is a conflict between Ptolemy's theory and Arab medieval theory, William Lilly tends to side with Ptolemy, which cannot be said to be irrelevant to the cultural and academic trend of the Renaissance. Adopting Ptolemy's in the theory of Triplicity and Fortuna, or the adoption of directions as the most important tool among timing techniques was to show Ptolemy's tendency.
Third, the researcher studied the impact of William Lilly's astrology on later astrology. After his death, astrology again showed signs of decline throughout Europe from the late 17th century, but his book "Christian Astrology" was rarely out of print in any form and continued to influence astrologists. It was largely influenced by this book that Horary Astrology did not disappear and continued, and many of the Horary Chart cases and the in-depth interpretation of the Natal Chart were valuable data for later students of astrology. Therefore, the researcher also tried to help domestic astrologists by supplementing the explanation of Lilly's Astrology case in the second half of this paper. Meanwhile, the astrological classics and their lists he left as a source of theory in his book provided and motivated classical astrology restoration research that began in the 2000s.
On 15 September 2003, a Westminster plaque was unveiled in England in his honor. Winston Churchill, Oscar Wilde, and others received the plaque, and he was the 53rd beneficiary in the United Kingdom and the first astrologer to do so. He is highly regarded as an astrologer who developed a new astrology theory, being recognized as a midpoint in the long and long history of astrology entering the 21st century. In Korea, William Lilly, a famous 17th-century English astrologer, did not have enough opportunity to be known due to the short academic research period of astrology. Through this study, we hope to make a meaningful contribution to the development of astrology research in Korea, asking about the limitations of William Lilly's astrology and activities, as well as the achievements and influences of that era.
