The purpose of this study is to provide foundational data for coaches and athletes to establish tactical strategies in response to the Most Wins in 3 matches rules by identifying the trend of the game through game analysis applying the Most Wins in 3 matches rules and examining variables affecting victory and defeat by rotation. To this end, a video analysis of the game was conducted on 114 games in the men's university from the round of 16 to the final of the 53th National Taekwondo Championships(Sparring) by Korea Taekwondo Association. The contents of the game analysis were analyzed through Logistic regression analysis to find out the effect of the game situation variables (number of attacks, score success rate, use of the left foot, use of the right foot, use of deception, non-use of deception, front foot attack, back foot attack, trunk attack, face attack, direction-forward, direction-forward) and kicking skill variables (roundhouse kick, pushing kick, inside kick, twist kick, ax kick, spin kick, quick kick, narae kick, back spin kick, dolgae kick, back kick, punching) on the win or loss in the Most Wins in 3 matches rules. The results were analyzed through an Independent t-test to find out the difference between the winning and losing groups. In addition, the effect of the first and second rounds on the final win or loss was investigated using decision tree analysis to find out what is the determinant of the final win or loss in the Most Wins in 3 matches rules. The conclusion of this study according to the game analysis is as follows.
Firstly, in determining the final outcome of the Most Wins in 3 matches rules, the first round emerged as the most crucial factor. Winning the first round resulted in a 90.4% probability of securing the final victory. Furthermore, factors involving a win in the first round followed by a loss in the second round indicated a 56.0% likelihood of achieving final victory, while a loss in the first round followed by a win in the second round showed a 44.0% probability of achieving final victory. This signifies that the first round emerged as the most significant determinant in the final outcome.
Secondly, the analysis of the influence of game situation variables on the outcome of each round revealed that the scoring success rate was statistically significant in all three rounds: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. However, the remaining game situation variables did not exhibit a statistically significant impact.
Thirdly, the analysis of the impact of kicking skill variables on the outcome of each round revealed that the pushing kick had a statistically significant influence on victory in all three rounds: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. Additionally, the ax kick showed a positive impact on victory in the 1st round. However, it was observed that the roundhouse kick had a negative effect on victory, particularly in the 1st round, while the dolgae kick displayed a similar adverse influence in the 2nd round. This underscores the significance of the pushing kick as a crucial factor contributing to victory.
Fourthly, the analysis of differences in game situation variables between winning and losing groups across each round revealed that, in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd rounds, the winning group consistently demonstrated a higher scoring success rate than the losing group. Additionally, in the 1st round, the winning group attempted facial attacks more frequently than the losing group. However, a notable distinction emerged in back foot attacks, as the losing group executed more back foot attacks than the winning group. Furthermore, in the 3rd round, the winning group exhibited a higher frequency of front foot attacks compared to the losing group.
Fifthly, the analysis of differences in kicking skill variables between winning and losing groups across each round revealed that, in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd rounds, the frequency of pushing kick was higher in the winning group compared to the losing group. Additionally, in the 1st and 2nd rounds, ax kick were more frequent in the winning group than in the losing group. However, notable differences were observed in the usage of roundhouse kick, dolgae kick, and back kick, where the losing group executed these techniques more frequently than the winning group.
If summarizing the five conclusions, in matches applying the Most Wins in 3 matches rules, the first round emerged as the most crucial factor influencing the final outcome. Additionally, in all three rounds, both the scoring success rate and the pushing kick technique demonstrated a positive impact on victory. Moreover, when comparing the winning and losing groups, similar outcomes were observed. Hence, in matches adhering to the Most Wins in 3 matches rules, it is evident that scoring success rate and proficiency in executing the pushing kick technique are vital factors for securing victory. Furthermore, it was found that the ax kick technique had a positive impact on victory in the 1st round, whereas the roundhouse kick technique showed a detrimental effect. Similarly, in the 2nd round, the dolgae kick technique also displayed a negative influence on achieving victory. The analysis of differences between winning and losing groups revealed significant disparities in game situation variables. Apart from scoring success rate, significant differences were observed between the winning and losing groups in back foot attacks and facial attacks during the 1st round. Additionally, in the 3rd round, there was a notable discrepancy between the winning and losing groups in terms of front foot attacks. In kicking skill variables, besides the pushing kick technique, significant differences were observed between winning and losing groups in the employment of roundhouse kick, ax kick, dolgae kick,and back kick techniques during the 1st round. Moreover, during the 2nd round, there were notable differences between winning and losing groups specifically in the utilization of ax kick, dolgae kick, and back kick techniques. Therefore, if you win the first round of the the Most Wins in 3 matches rules and establish strategies and tactics through game situation variables and kicking skill variables that affect the victory in each round, the probability of winning the game will increase.
