This study intends to present a new standard for job selection through considering the Saju(四柱) of an individual by comparing and analyzing the differences between the classical thoughts and the modern research on the occupation theory with the Saju of people. To that end, this study classified the classical theories of the Science of Myeongli into the occupation theories of either Gobub-Myeongli(古法命理學) or Sinbub-Myeongli(新法命理學), respectively, thereby again differentiating them into modern occupation and Saju research by content.
The Science of SajuMyungli(四柱命理) is an inference system that reasonably prognosticates the fate of an individual by encoding the year, month, date, and time of birth of the person to a Ganji(干支), classifying it again into the combination of Yin(陰) and Yang(陽) with Ohhaeng(五行), then, it interprets their correlation. In other words, it is one of the philosophical domains that discuss the fortunes of the fate of an individual on the basis of a fixed order and an academic system together with regard to the Palja(八字) combined in the Saju as well as the actions of an individual. In addition, it can also identify occupation and vocational aptitude, and its research outcomes are gradually being proven in academia.
This study presented the classification of occupations in the Science of SajuMyungli based on the original content of following books; Baekhotongeui(白虎通義), Okjojeongjingyeong(玉照定眞經), Nakrokjabuju(珞琭子賦註), Iheojungmyeongseo(李虛中命書), Okjosineungjingyeong(玉照神應眞經), Wonchungangohsammyeongjinam(袁天綱五星三命指南), Myeongtongbu(明通賦), Japyeongsammyeongtongbyeonyeonwon(子平三命通變淵源), Ohhaengjunggi(五行精紀), Jukchunsu(滴天髓), Sammyeongtonghoi(三命通會), Yeonhaejapyeong(淵海子平), Myeonhliyakeon(命理約言), Gungtongbogam(窮通寶鑑), Jukchunsusuchunmi(滴天髓闡微), Japyeongjinjeonpyeongju(子平眞詮評註). Moreover, it intended to investigate modern occupational classification based on the Korean Standard of Occupations.
The literal meaning of occupation is to work continuously for a certain period of time according to the aptitude and ability of an individual to make a living. In this study, about 600 occupations were collected and classified by referring to the original books of the Science of Myeongli. This study intended to view the meaning of occupation as a means of ego-realization or self-realization along with the literal meaning. The ego-introspecting behaviors allow humans to experience personal and social maturity together, thereby helping them to be reborn as a complete self. Ultimately, the practice of introspection not only contributes to the establishment of individual subjectivity but also enables individuals to pursue a given life happier. It can be said that this is the reason why healthy ego-realization is emphasized during human life as a continuous task.
The test paper on career aptitude and career selection tends to relate even the personality and hobby of individuals to the job. This can also be considered an outcome of the modern era that appeared by reflecting the human desire to use a job as a way of ego-realization. In most cases, the individual tendencies, occupational characteristics, temperament, and occupational characteristics are typically judged by Enneagram, DISC, and MBTI developed in the West. It is a fact that finding the aptitude of an individual under the contemplation of human existence or in the confusion of values has become more difficult as society becomes too complex, diversified, and functionalized. Thus, modern Western scholars are shedding light on the domain of Eastern philosophy again and putting significant effort into research, furthermore, the academic community of the Science of Myeongli is also seeking ways to integrate it with various fields of study. Among them, there tends to be a high interest in the topic of social independence of humans, that is, occupation and career path. However, although consistent studies are being progressed on this topic, it is not easy to find a study that embraces the types of occupations recorded in the original books for the Science of Myeongli into one.
There always exists an accumulated database behind academic development. In the Science of Myeongli, there are cross-sectional considerations of original books, fragmentary comparative analysis with modern occupations, and studies focusing on specific occupational groups. However, no study case has been yet conducted to organize and verify these theories. In that regard, this study collected the occupations and modern case studies on the occupations that were recorded in the major original books of Gobub-Myeongli and Sinbub-Myeongli. Afterward, this study analyzed the collected studies to present beneficial measures in the present era and classified them into several categories to contemplate, such as what they like, what they are good at, and what is needed to do better what they are good at. The three theories classified were named the occupation preference theory, career path aptitude theory, and occupation selection theory and they were then analyzed. As a result, it was able to identify that the influential factors on occupation decision include the Ohhaeng and Sibsung(十星: 十神) that are strong forces in the occupation preference theory, Gyeogguk(格局) in the career path aptitude theory, the Yongsin(用神) and Haengwoon(行運) in the occupation selection theory.
