The modern cities including in high rises and apartments are functional and mundane much more than spiritual, and are less reflected on common value and tradition than those in the past cities.
Therefore, each city should seek the symbolism grounded on the perception and the experience of residents. It should harmonize the elements, such as visibility, centrality and complexity, and establish its attraction and dignity.
In this side, this paper wants to analyze the symbolism examples and the scenery in Kwang-Ju and find the alternatives of symbolosm settlement.
「Kwang-Ju」named in AD.940 is the Korean city traditional and local which is centered in the town of Kwang-Ju. But from A.D. 1887 city shape and environment began to change as the city of recent times by the immigration of Japanese. Especially, Japan begain to control korea as its colony and enforce the policy of nationality obliteration while she erased the place involved in the symbol of Korean spirit.
This plan obliterates and destroys the representative sceneries in Kwang-ju ; such as 「Mt. Tae Bong」「Kyong Yang Pond」「Kwang-Ju Town」and 「Kwang-Ju Park」. Since residents perceived and experienced the external structure and the meaning of them in the side of history, scenery, geomancer and topography for three years, they have appreciated the symbolic image forming the individuation and the originality in a place. If these emblems existed in Kwang-Ju until now, the landscape of Kwang-Ju City would become of fluent and beautiful.
Kwang-Ju would have had the symbols, such as affluent green shade of trees, large lake and traditional architecture, and expanded the materials of verbal symbol and urban icons.
It would have expanded the historic public environment and the midtown area in the side of centrality. The coexistence of the past and the present would have had environmental meaning in the side of complexity.
But by the investigation about the symbolism situation of Kwang-Ju through four guides, picture reports and pamphlets, building are formed in close order, and the city space and the green shade of trees are insufficient. The residents, therefore, have no the dignity and the attraction in Kwang-Ju
But urban districts are harmonious with the Mt.Mudung which forms the skyline in Kwang-Ju. The urban districts, such as Chung-Chang and KmNam Streets, the fountain in the front of provincial hall, Kwang-Ju and Sa-Chik Parks, form the public environments while give no impression as a historic city.
