Since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Korea and China in 1992, there have been many studies on geography education and geography textbooks in Korea and China. However, after Korea's revised curriculum 2015, as well as China's revised general high school curriculum plan and each subject's curriculum standard 2020 being implemented, comparative studies on high school geography textbooks between the two countries have not been properly conducted yet. This paper aims to provide implications for future research, curriculum revision, and textbook compilation in both countries. Therefore, representative high school geography textbooks in Korea and China are selected and analyzed to examine their similarities and differences. The research was conducted in three areas: the geography curriculum, the system of high school geography textbooks, and the content of geography textbooks of the two countries. The subjects of the study were Korean geography and world geography produced by Mirae N Publishing, Korea, and Geography 1 and Geography 2 textbooks for high school published by People's Education Publishing, China.

The results obtained through the analysis of high school geography textbooks in Korea and China are as follows:

First of all, the geography curriculum in both countries are national level, and the perception of geography is almost the same. The compositional areas of geography education in the two countries coincide, and there are many common goals of the similar contents. Independent geography courses are set in both countries but the composition and content system of the curriculum are different. In Korea, geography is implemeted as part of a common subject named integrated society and elective subjects in according to the curriculum. In China, curriculum (curriculum plan and each subject's curriculum standard) are established and implemented according to compulsory education and high school levels separately, and geography subjects are classified into compulsory subjects, optional compulsory subjects, and elective subjects. Additionally, the geography textbooks to be studied in Korea correspond to regional geography, but the content system follows systematic geography. The geography textbooks to be studied in China consist contents of natural geography or human geography separately. It is also unique that the contents of geoscience(Geography 1) dominate a considerable proportion.

The comparison results of the composition of high school geography textbooks in Korea and China are presented as follows. The main components of geography textbooks and the text is developed in much similar ways. The amount of each chapter and sections is similar. Also, a variety of image material are used. Unlike a Korean textbook, there is no introductions for the characteristics of corners in Chinese geography textbooks. Korean textbooks use more diverse corners and visual materials. For the difference in the end of the chapter, Korean geography textbooks induce autonomous learning, and contain more volume and visual materials. In addition, photography is the most frequently used visual data in both countries, in Korea map follows photography, while in China picture ranks second

Finally, by comparing the contents, there are many common topics including landform, natural disasters, vegetation and soil, cities and rural areas, industries and population, but there are also other topics such as geoscience, climate, resources and transportation which are introduced or stressed on in another way. Even common topics show different choices and concerns in contents. In addition, in terms of the type and characteristics of the cases used, Korea prefers cases close to daily life, and China chooses many important construction or national development strategies.

The difference in the curriculum, composition of geography textbooks, and content between the two countries is mainly due to the political and economic situation, the development of geography, and curriculum reorganization. The influence of political factors on geography textbooks is mainly reflected in the purpose and content selection of textbooks. Economic factors are also reflected in the contents of geography textbooks, particularly by means of taking new directions, systems, and contents into geography textbooks. The development and change of geography itself, that is, natural geography, human geography, and regional geography, affects the content and structure of geography textbooks. The curriculum reorganization affects geography textbooks in terms of subject nature, number of subjects, textbook editions, and contents.
