The study of ‘Divination of the Nine-Star Astrology’ is the study of predicting human destiny by inferring future life according to a set logic based on the foretelling of being rich or poor, high or low in social class, good or ill luck, and fortune or misfortune. In other words, based on the Hado and Nakseo of the Book of Changes (周易), the study utilizes the Eight Trigrams for divination, as well as the nine stars and nine palaces, as its principle of operations. As such, this study aimed to identify the points of contradiction by comparing the Japanese Nine-Star Astrology and the Nine-Star Astrology of Seung-Jae Lee, and then seek a new Divination of the Nine-Star Astrology based on the above examination.

Accordingly, this study presents an overview of the theoretical background and practical analysis of the origins and ideological foundations of the Nine-Star Astrology as follows.

First, Hado is an image obtained based on the 55 dots drawn on the back of the dragon-horse that emerged from the Yellow River in China by Fuxi, who created the eight trigrams of the former world about five thousand years from now. As such, Fuxi analyzed the principles of Hado and created the eight trigrams by the embodiment of the principles of yin-yang, movement-standstill, as well as those of the substance of the universe in letters. In the case of Nak-Seo, it was named and arranged by King Woo (禹王) to rule the laws of the land about 2,500 years after the appearance of Hado. The mysterious turtle, the source of Hado, is called Divine Nak-Seo, and it is said that King Woo created Hong-Bum-Goo-Joo (洪範九疇) based on Nak-Seo. Based on the examination of this Nak-Seo, King Woo studied the principle of Yeok (易) to build the foundation. Thereafter, during the Zhou Dynasty, when Zhu Gong wrote the Hyo-Sa (爻辭) of the 64 chapters of the Book of Changes (周易), which led to the establishment of the grandeur ideological system called the Book of Changes (周易).

Second, ‘Divination of the Nine-Star Astrology’ is a historical creation that interprets divination in a wide range of areas and fields using the overall study of the Book of Changes (周易) series. In other words, ‘Divination of the Nine-Star Astrology’, a part of the Book of Changes (周易), is an approach from the perspective of constant mechanics of the Book of Changes, intending to find a solution to the problems desperately encountered in our daily life via divination. Accordingly, the nine stars and nine palaces of ‘Divination of the Nine-Star Astrology’ are good divination used when pioneering a future life. The nine stars are the natural numbers from 1 to 9 in Nak-Seo, and the nine palaces are fixed places where Nak-Seo is divided into nine spaces, thereby introducing the concept of space of the nine stars. To put it differently, the nine palaces are the space where the nine stars stay according to the change of time. ‘Divination of the Nine-Star Astrology’ is variable divination, and it is possible to interpret the past and present, and furthermore, what conclusions result from the person who is the subject of divination by identifying in which palace the stays in terms of the life table of the ‘Yearly-Life-Star (年命星)’s year, month, and day.

Third, from ancient times to the present, divination has presented a method of observing special phenomena that happen to nature or people or identifying in advance future events or specific events through specific tools or rituals. Divination is defined as judging and predicting future events or fates by observing special natural or human phenomena, and learning hidden supernatural forces and intentions. In this sense, as a technique for predicting the future, divination also refers to the ‘skills of life’ with which humans get closer to the divine power (神力). In the same context, under the sense of purpose to expand the divination culture of the Nine-Star Astrology, this study compared and analyzed the problems revealed by the mutual differences between Japanese-style divination and Seung-Jae Lee’s divination based on the theories of Myungri (Four Pillars Theory) of Old Law and Myungri (Four Pillars Theory) of New Law.

Fourth, modern Myungri studies are called Shinbeop (New Law) Myungri studies. The reason is that from the completion of the interpretation system that examined ‘日干(Il-gan)' as the subject of the Four Pillar Theory by 'Seo Jia-Pyung' and 'Seo-Seung' from the five dynasties of China, through the southern dynasty, which led to the advanced simplification method of today, rather than the Old Law Myungri. The simplified method of Shinbeopmyungri systematized the Saeng-Keug Je-Hwa of the yin and yang and five elements centered around '日干(Il-gan)' as a predicate concept of '十星(ten stars)'. In addition, it employs a relatively simple system of simplification to determine the Geyok-gook (格局) centering on the birth '月令(monthly order)'. On the contrary, the simplification method of Gobeop (Old Law) Myungri is a method of reasoning through the combination of ‘Shinsal’ and yearly pillar (Yeon-Joo). In particular, in contrast to the theory of Gobeopmyungri that pursued the '命'(Myeong)’ of the person who will continue the glory of the family based on 'birth year', the theory of Shinbeopmyungri, which began in the Song dynasty, has been converted to a method of inferring the glory of an individual focusing on ‘日干(Il-gan)'.

If Japanese divination is used in the interpretation of the Divination of the Nine-Star Astrology, the rate of accuracy was insufficient due to a contradiction in interpretation. This resulted from using Japanese divination focusing on the birth year in the Old Law method of Heo-Jun Lee, a representative Myungri of the time. Using Japanese divination cannot be justified or rationalized as the standard based on the simple reason that the method centering on the Yearly-Life-Star (年命星) had preceded. This study raised the issue that the Divination of the Nine-Star Astrology should be interpreted based on the new transition from Table 44 of Chapter IV, Japanese-style Divination to Table 45, Divination of the Nine-Star Astrology of Seung-Jae Lee, as in the case of Saju Myungrihak, which divides the system into Kobeopmyungri and Shinbeopmyungri.

Today, Nine-Star Astrology is an unexplored field and remains unfinished due to its short history. In light of such circumstances, this study aimed to logically prove the originality of Divination of the Nine-Star Astrology of Seung-Jae Lee. For any unresolved issues in this study, they should be resolved through more in-depth research. As such, it is expected that this study will be a turning point in the perception of the Nine-Star Astrology.
