The purpose of this study is to understand the general matters and awareness of art therapy for workers of multicultural centers who provide services to multicultural families. Based on prior research on the recognition and revitalization of art therapy, 25 questionnaires were developed and 228 multicultural centers nationwide were surveyed online. The results of a survey of 63 multicultural center workers using Excel (Excel Office, 2019) are as follows.
First of all, 42.9 percent of multicultural centers open an art therapy service, and most of them use individual art therapy. The main users of art therapy service at the multicultural center are children. At multicultural centers, part-time art therapists are highly employed, and art therapy is often conducted once a week for 30 to 60 minutes and 10 times a week. According to a survey, full-time art therapists are employed at multicultural centers in Seoul, Gyeonggi, Jeolla, and Gyeongsang provinces, which have large budgets. The Ministry of Gender Equality and Family ranked first with 59.3 percent of the budget for multicultural centers, and used various budgets, including local governments and donations.
Second, 84.1 percent of workers at multicultural centers said they needed art treatment through related organizations (center and school). Workers at the multicultural center recognize that art therapy is a therapeutic factor that can help multicultural families to express their feelings or thoughts in words, and that it can help them communicate psychologically and emotionally with multicultural families.
Third, workers at the multicultural center expect psychological and emotional stability of multicultural family members through art therapy. 96.8 percent of workers at the center answered to propose multicultural families to participate in art therapy, especially for the children. According to the results, workers at multicultural centers are most considered about their experience in art therapy, and the most important thing to introduce art therapy at multicultural centers is administrative and financial support and securing budget.
In order for multicultural families to receive psychological and emotional support, practical and practical cooperation ways are needed. This study provides the effectiveness and positive perception of art therapy, and it is considered that art therapy will be activated in multicultural centers.
This study was able to find the significance of the study in that it studied various matters to revitalize art therapy at multicultural centers through the current status and awareness of art therapy for multicultural center workers in the absence of research on art therapy. In addition, it can be used as basic data for the recognition of art therapy and activation of art therapy by multicultural center workers.
Through this study, it is expected that professional and systematic art therapy services will be provided at multicultural centers in the future, and various approaches and developments of art therapy are expected through continuous follow-up studies in the future.
