‘Whether the Tathāgatas were to arise or whether the Tathāgatas were not to arise, this interdependence(idapaccayatā) has remained.’ According to the reference of Nikāya (SN 12:20), ‘the principle of dependent arising(P. paṭiccasamuppāda, Skt. pratītyasamutpāda)’ has remained to be reasonable.
If Buddha claimed beyond something, it did not differ from returning to the ultimate value that Buddha had rejected. Therefore, Buddha established his enlightenment as well as reality in this world exceeding the previous both extremes. The meaning of ‘has remained(P. ṭitha, Skt. sthita)’ has been presently remained as past participle, and this implicates to be continued whenever it is reviewed. Therefore, pratītyasamutpāda is a ‘principle’ meaning eternal stability as well as a ‘law’ or ‘pattern’. Without establishment of pratītyasamutpāda within Buddhism developed diversely accoring to time and space, it is a truth which cannot be considered as Buddhism.
According to a reference of Nikāya (MN 28), “One who sees paṭiccasamuppāda sees dhamma, one who sees dhamma sees paṭiccasamuppāda.” dhamma(Skt. dharma), that is truth, can be confirmed by pratītyasamutpāda.
Each school has unique pratītyasamutpāda, and Vasubandhu(CE. 400-480) created a compound word, vijñānapariṇāma, combining pariṇāma(chuan-pien 轉變) with vijñāna(shih 識) in Yogācāra.
Since Sylvain Lévi(1863-1935) found the Sanskrit version of Triṃśikāvijñaptibhāṣya written by Sthiramati(CE. 510-570), the different interpretations were developed on the Triṃśikakārikā between Sthiramati and Dharmapāla(CE. 530-561)&Hsuan-tsang(CE. 602?-664) whether vijñānapariṇāma in c line and pariṇāma in d line in 1st stanza are the synonyms.
Unknowingly, these four masters generated fierce controversies in the future generations, and one of them was from Ueda Yoshibumi(上田義門, 1904-1993) who considered vijñānapariṇāma in c line and pariṇāma in d line as the synonyms interpreting the former as karmadhāraya samāsa. He claimed that Dharmapāla&Hsuan-tsang had distorted different directions with the former as shih so-pien(識所變) and the latter as neung-pien(能變), resulting in the different Vasubandhu’s real intention.
Though pariṇāma had originated from Sāṃkhya, Sthiramati prepared [vijñāna]pariṇāma as a concept to criticize it. And through mutual influence between ālayavijñāna(a-lai-yeh shih 阿賴耶識) and 7 consciousness(7shih 7識), [vijñāna]pariṇāma was revealed to possess pratītyasamutpāda.
And applying this, the aforementioned sentences of Nikāya (MN 28), “One who sees vijñānapariṇāma sees dhamma, one who sees dhamma sees vijñānapariṇāma.” can be continued.
